5 Ways to Give Your Hair an End-of-Summer Refresh

Check out these easy tips to give your hair a warm-weather refresh.

I love the carefree, laid-back vibe of summer, especially when it comes to beauty. I feel completely confident running out the door with a dab of lip gloss, mascara and beachy waves in my hair on almost every warm summer day.

However, that more lax attitude often results in the sun, saltwater and chlorine wreaking havoc after a month or so of summer fun. What can you do to make sure your hair is looking fabulous for the upcoming fall season? Here are five simple tips.

1. Trim Those Ends
Regular trims are always important, but especially critical after the summer months. Heat and sun can really frazzle your mane (particularly the ends of hair), which are constantly exposed to the sizzling elements. Don't worry about lopping it all off — just a 1/2- to 1-inch trim will make the biggest difference.

2. Say Bye-Bye to Brassy
All hair colors (even super dark ones) can get a bit brassy in the summer. Unless you are wearing a hat or head scarf every day of the month, the sun's rays can give many shades of hair the slightest tinge of orange (which aren’t to be confused with gloriously golden professional-grade streaks).

If your hair is color-treated, try an at-home color with a neutral undertone, or let your stylists work their magic. For brunettes, I find some of the color-depositing shampoos in cooler tones really help to tame the brassy notes. ( Pantene’s Brunette Expressions is a great option for this.)

3. Deep Condition
I can't stress this enough:. Make time for a deep conditioning treatment every weekend to prevent dried-out, frizzy hair. You don't even need to see a professional for this task. Try Pantene’s Deep Moisturizing Treatment at home.

4. Add a Layer or Two
At the end of summer, I sometimes feel a little blah about my hair — usually because I've let it grow over the course of a few months. Although you might be dead-set on keeping your longer mane, add a few face-framing layers and/or longer layers throughout, which will give your hair that oomph and movement you're looking for come fall.

5. Teach Yourself a New Trick
I always like to approach the new season by housing a new styling trick up my sleeve. Whether it be by learning a fresh loose updo or a new bohemian braid, take the time to teach yourself how to welcome the new season with a fun new look.

Quick Tip: Regular trims will not only keep your hair healthier, but will also give you the illusion of longer hair when those split ends are snipped off for good!
