Creative Ways to Organize Your Closets

Surprise guests — and yourself — by adding color and creativity to your closets.

“Keep it attractive” are three words to remember when organizing anything in your home. The more eye-pleasing something is, the more we are inclined to keep it that way.

Here are some simple tips to attractively organize your closets.

Colors
As children, we loved rainbows. Whether it was in the sky or a sticker we bought at a stationery store, we were drawn to them. Try arranging your clothing in your closet by color starting with red on the left, going through all the colors of the rainbow and finishing with white, black and brown. Not only will this make your closet look cheerful, but it makes getting dressed a snap.

Shoes
A super simple solution to shoe organizing is storing them in small clear plastic boxes with lids. These can either stack on the floor underneath hung clothing or be placed on a shelf for easy access. Using clear plastic also makes it easy to spot the perfect pair to go with any outfit.

Budget
If you are on a budget and need to keep your spending down, try adding a small dresser to a corner of your closet to store sweaters, swimwear and athletic wear. Small, practical — and inexpensive — pieces of furniture can be found in thrift stores and garage sales. Even the smallest closet can usually fit a modest piece of furniture that can help organization. Consider painting each drawer front a different color or covering them with decorative paper.

Utilize Your Closet Door
The inside of your closet door can be valuable organizational real estate: A small coat rack on the inside of the closet door can be the perfect place to hang belts, scarves or even jewelry.

Baskets
What’s not to love about a woven basket? Baskets and organizing go hand in hand. They can be used on the floor of your closet for storing winter coats, on the top shelf for those jeans you are planning to fit into next spring or even used to hide birthday gifts for your children.

Labeling
Label baskets, drawers and plastic bins so you can find what you need quickly. You can even find decorative labels and create custom tags to give your own personal flair to anything you stick them to.

The key to successful organizing is really keeping it fun, attractive and, above all, simple.

What’s your favorite creative tip for encouraging consistent organization in your closet?

I started my closet make-over by removing the doors. Just an idea to share with those saying how small their closets are.

Hi everyone, I'm the author of this article. I agree that man of us have much smaller closets overall. If you click on my blog link in my bio there is actually a photo of my closet. This is a photo from my last house which was a 1927 cottage. My new closet which is probably twice the size but still small has quite a few of these ideas in play. Thanks so much for the comments.

All of these closet articles end up showing only 2 shirts, 2 pants, 2 pairs of shoes, etc, which is not realistic!! I use 2 rows of bars for hanging - pants on 1 & tops on other. then 1 higher bar for anything long including a fabric set of shelves for purses & tote bags. All out of season are packed in 2 big plastic bins in the corner. There's a Longaberger hamper in the front & a wash basket under the fabric shelves.

My closet is much smaller than the one in the picture and I needed more space so I added a second shelf above the hanger rod and store out-of-season clothes on it. I also bought some wire storage cubes which I put on the floor of my closet and store sweaters and jeans in them. It's easy to see what's in the cubes and they hold lots of clothes.
