There’s no need to run to the hair salon every time you need a color touch-up. We have some easy tips on how you can get gorgeous results at home and at a fraction of the cost.
First, pick out the right hair color for your needs. Are you looking for 100 percent gray coverage with subtle tones and highlights? We recommend using Clairol's Expert Age Defy collection . For a bold new hue, try Vidal Sassoon’s London Luxe collection.
In addition to your at-home coloring kit, here’s what you’ll need:
- Old shirt
- Lotion or petroleum jelly
- Large safety clip
- Hair clip
Put on an old shirt, then grab a towel and wrap it around your neck and shoulders. To avoid getting dye on your face and ears, apply the lotion or petroleum jelly around your hairline and over your ears. Now that you’re all set up, follow the color mixing instructions on the box.
Using a comb, part your hair down the middle and create a section just big enough so the dye can be worked through.
3. Paint it On, Pull it Through
Begin by applying the hair color at the roots, and then work your way down to the tips. After the color has been applied to that section, clip the section to the top of your head. Continue separating hair into sections and applying the color in the same fashion: beginning at the roots and working your way down, always making sure you didn’t miss any spots before moving onto the next section.
Now that you are done applying the hair color, it’s time to let the color process. The directions on the box will usually give you a small time frame. We recommend waiting the full time for the best color absorption, especially if you have any gray hairs. When it is time to rinse off the color, make sure to use cool water — it helps the color set.
To keep your color looking fresh, use Clairol Nice ‘N Easy Root Touch-Up in between your regular coloring schedule.
