6 Ways to Extend the Life of Your Haircut

Here are a few tips to make sure you get the most bang for your haircut buck.

Let's face it — hair is hair, and nothing we can do will keep it from growing and eventually compromising the style of a haircut. But here are a few tips to make sure you get the most bang for your buck.

1. Bang Trims
If you are one of the masses donning bangs these days, remember that most stylists will trim bangs for free. Just a call to say you're dropping by should suffice, and your stylist can quickly update and refresh your look. (Don't forget to tip, though!) Also, keep in mind that if you aren't the bang-maintenance type, sideswept bangs grow out very easily without the nearly constant trims that their blunt counterparts do.

2. Pick a Cut That Blends With Your Style
If you go for a look that really doesn't suit your lifestyle, every day that passes might seem like an eternity. Be sure to choose a look that complements you in every facet of your life so you will continue to love it for the duration — and won't be tempted to run back to the salon.

3. Deep Condition
A weekly deep conditioning treatment will do wonders for stretching out the time in between cuts. When the hair is moisturized and split end-free, your hairstyle will look better for much longer.

4. Cut Back on Shampoos
You really don't need to wash your hair everyday, folks. In fact, going a few days in between washes keeps your hair healthy and free from the harsh stripping caused by some shampoos.

5. The Other Shampoo
Worried that your hair won't look so fresh after a day or two of not washing? Just apply dry shampoo to the roots, and let it do its magic. Not only will it rid you of your oiliness, it actually adds volume and texture to the hair. It's a win-win!

6. Avoid Textured or Razor Haircuts
Even though textured cuts are very popular and get rid of the dreaded hair 'triangle,' razored ends are much thinner and very prone to splitting, thus needing more frequent trims.

Quick Tip : Oils and serums are great for keeping hair moisturized, protected and extending the life of a haircut. Be sure to use sparingly, though — just a tiny bit too much hair oil will send you right back to shampooing and square one!
