Versatility is the name of the game when it comes to everyday hairstyles.

On days when you want a quick hairstyle, you always rely on the ponytail. Give an old standby a modern touch with four ideas that can be dressed up or down for anything from parties to everyday errands.

1. Intentionally Messy Ponytail
Yes, you can be intentionally messy and still look beautiful. Whether you have curly or straight hair, you can make this style work. (This look works best with day-old hair.)

  1. Use a comb to make a super straight, deep side part
  2. Tease the back quarter of your hair by brushing it toward your scalp (backcombing)
  3. Gently brush the front of your hair back to hide the teased section and make the top of your hairdo smooth
  4. Take the teased part of your hair and pin it behind your head, positioning the pins in an “X” shape
  5. Take all of your hair and secure it tightly in a low ponytail

2. Inside-Out Ponytail
For when you’re in a serious time crunch, get this super cute look in a flash. If your hair is curly, it will have a messy look. For straight hair, this style will turn out super sleek.

  1. Put all of your hair in a loose, low ponytail
  2. Loosen the base of your ponytail more by gently pulling the hair elastic outwards
  3. Create a small hole by putting two fingers through the base of your ponytail
  4. Flip your ponytail upwards and then pull it down through the hole you created with your fingers
  5. Pull it tight and smooth out any bumps

3. Low and Loose Ponytail
Perfect for full, curly hair, this look is effortless but put-together.

  1. Gather your hair into a loose, low ponytail, allowing stray wisps to frame your face
  2. From your ponytail, take a small section of hair and wrap it around the top of your ponytail to cover your hair tie
  3. Secure the hair with bobby pins
  4. Dress it up with a thin, embellished or beaded headband for a stunningly simple look

4. Braided Ponytail
If you can’t stand the thought of hair in your face, this style is perfect for you. Don’t worry — no French braid skills needed here!

  1. Part your hair
  2. Gather a small section of hair from your part to your ear and begin to braid, pulling toward the back of your head
  3. Tie off the braid or clip it to the back of your head
  4. Repeat step two on the opposite side
  5. Unclip or untie your first braid and tie both braids together with a clear, elastic band depending on where you want your ponytail (If you want a higher ponytail, tie your braids in the middle of your head.)
  6. Gather all of your hair and secure into a ponytail

Tip: Finish your look with a decorative hair tie, or statement earrings if you’re going for a fancier look.
