Celebrate Black History Month with these 4 iconic hairstyles that defined their decades!

By: Tiffany Bey

Though it’s always a good time to celebrate being a beautiful black woman, this month is especially important – it’s Black History Month!

I’m sure many of my sistas out there would agree that we love our hair – it’s unique, versatile and always evolving with the times. To celebrate the launch of Pantene’s Gold Series collection – developed by scientists and perfected by stylists – I’m sharing some of my favorite iconic looks, and how you can recreate them at home.

The PompadourThe Pompadour
This fabulous (and protective) hairstyle screams 1950s vintage glam – not to mention it’s so easy to achieve at home. Be sure to check out the video below to see the Pompadour style in action!

Instructions:

  1. Starting with dry natural hair parted down the middle, use wide-tooth comb to comb back of hair all the way up
  2. Apply 2-3 pumps of Pantene Gold Series Intense Hydrating Oil to palms and distribute evenly throughout hair
  3. Gather hair at the back of your head with both hands, twisting into one large twist. Secure with bobby pins as you go, stopping once you get halfway up the back

Style Tip: Make sure to leave out two large sections of hair at the front of your head from the twist.

  1. Using a natural bristle brush, brush up one of the front side sections of hair, and start to roll section inward towards middle part; secure with bobby pins. Repeat on other side

The AfroThe Afro
In the 60s – when the Civil Rights Movement was at its peak – black women rocked the Afro as a powerful symbol to exude black pride and reject the societal norms of beauty.

Instructions:

  1. Start by applying Pantene Gold Series Curl Defining Pudding, evenly distributing throughout damp hair
  2. Using a wide-tooth comb, gentle detangle your hair
  3. Using a diffuser, lightly blow dry hair until completely dry

Style Tip: If you want to prep your style overnight, skip step #3 and do this instead: Section hair into four equal parts – front left, front right, back left, back right. Twist each section and apply a hair tie to the ends. Put on a silk scarf before going to bed, and then carefully take out each section in the morning.

  1. Using a pick comb, comb out ‘fro to desired size

Bantu KnotsBantu Knots
Bantu knots are a black girl signature that have withstood the test of time! Originating in West Africa by the Bantu people thousands of years ago, this is a perfect style for all of our natural sistas.

Want to rock the Bantu knots? Check out the video below to see how you can get this look at home!

Instructions:

  1. Starting with dry hair, apply two pumps of Pantene Gold Series Leave-On Detangling Milk and smooth through ends. This will help detangle, tame frizz, moisturize and soften your locks
  2. Using a wide-tooth comb, gently detangle your hair
  3. Section hair into however many knots you’d like
  4. Twist each section of hair around in a circular motion until it coils, secure with bobby pins

Box BraidsBox Braids
From the 90s to now, box braids have been makin’ a serious comeback! And it’s likely due to their versatility – from long and luscious to sky-high buns and ponies, this style can be rocked an endless amount of ways.

Style Tip: Before trying out this braided style, make sure your locks are properly prepped – shampooed, detangled, deep-conditioned and blowdried.

Instructions:

  1. Starting with dry hair, use a natural bristle brush to brush out hair until smooth
  2. Apply a dime-sized amount of Pantene Gold Series Hydrating Butter-Crème to palms and smooth through hair from mid-shaft to ends
  3. Depending on the size of braids you’d like, section about 1/4- to 1-inch of hair, braiding as you go
  4. Repeat until entire head is braided

Hey Guys I am a proud supporter of the natural hair styles. I have been natural for a year in a half now, just using ONLY Cantu Products. On my hair and it has really made a difference in the health of my hair. Plus I do a twice a month hair protein treatment which just 2 raw eggs, 1/4 of extra virgin olive oil, mix both in a bowl; let stand for 1 1/2 hours. Rinse with cool water and shampoo and condition. Followed by pure coconut oil let stand for 1 hour, rinse cool water, and style!
