How to Care for Latina Hair

How to Care for Latina Hair

Straight, curly, wavy and colored – Latina hair is diverse. Here’s how to take care of it.

It’s a myth that all Latinas are the same. We come in different shapes, sizes and colors, and with different hair types to style and tame. When it comes to hair and beauty, what works for your sister, cousin or best friend might not be what works for you.

Take that as a blessing, though. Isn’t it beautiful that we are all so different and unique?

No matter your hair type, there are certain things that we should all do to have beautiful, healthy tresses. Generally, the curlier your locks, the less you should shampoo it – curly hair needs more of those natural oils. If you color your hair, deep conditioning should be a priority in your beauty routine. The good news is there is an assortment of products with specific properties designed to match all our different hair care needs.

Wavy Hair
With wavy hair, you can typically go a couple of days between shampoos. When you do wash your hair, use a volumizing shampoo. After shampooing, a light conditioner should probably be enough. Once your hair is dry (pat, don’t rub) use mousse to give your hair the look you’re going for.

You can also use a dry shampoo like Herbal Essences Naked Dry Volume between washes to refresh your look.

Curly Hair
If you’re a Latina with curly hair, you are always fighting it to stay put, trying to keep it frizz-free, and have likely straightened it your fair share of times. All those products and heating tools are actually making your hair wilder. Curls are so beautiful and fun!

Embrace your curls. Buy products designed for curly hair that nourish, condition and fight frizz. Shampoo once or twice a week and use a nourishing shampoo only on your scalp. Then, condition all of your hair (including roots!) with a deep conditioner and leave it in for a couple of minutes. In between washes, brush and style hair with your fingers, use a nourishing spray oil to keep hair shiny and frizz-free, and keep hair feeling clean with the use of a dry shampoo.

Straight Hair
If you have straight hair, you probably wash your hair, let it air dry and carry on with your life like nothing happened. But you may also find yourself staring in the mirror trying to summon some sort of attitude from your hair. Oh, the struggle. To give more life to your hair you are probably going to indulge in using curling irons, hair sprays and the like. Remember that it’s all fun and games until you notice that your hair is not as healthy and shiny anymore.

Opt to use shampoos and conditioners that add volume to your tresses, and treat your hair to a nourishing hair mask at least once a month. Take a break from heating tools and try a sea salt spray to give your hair natural beachy waves. When using your curling iron, be sure to protect your hair from the heat and use oil to add shine to your tips.

Colored Hair
You love to make a statement with your amazing hair color. As you may already know, though, with great hair color comes great hair responsibility. Bleaching and all those chemicals behind your fabulous hue can take a toll on the health and texture of your hair. The smartest thing to do is to stick to products designed for colored hair, as they will have extra ingredients to keep your locks hydrated, healthy and even maintain your new hair color longer!

Like our curly-haired chicas, you should stick to a small amount of shampoo only on your scalp and focus on conditioning your hair. Also, use a hydrating mask once or twice a week.

As you can see, the holy trinity of shampoo, conditioner and nourishing treatments applies to all hair types. It’s all about little tweaks and tricks here and there that’ll help your specific type of hair stay its healthiest. Love your hair, have fun with it and take good care of it!
