4 Ways to Get Rid of Dandruff

With outside temperatures getting colder and inside conditions getting dryer, dandruff sufferers may be faced with that dreaded itchy scalp and annoying chronic flaking. Dandruff is rarely an indicator of a serious problem -- it’s generally just normal shedding of skin cells that’s heightened by hormones, diet and environmental factors. Instead of simply bearing with it, here are a few things you can do to get rid of dandruff fast.

Drop the junk food. First, try healing your scalp from within. Ditch fattening, processed, unhealthy foods and replace them with green leafy veggies which are known to be great for hair, skin and nails, fish that are a good source of healthy oils like salmon and black cod (or a quality fish oil supplement) and lean proteins including eggs, nuts and beans which help build and strengthen hair and skin.

Brush Thoroughly. Every time you wash -- or wet your hair in any way -- be sure to comb or brush it thoroughly immediately afterwards. The pores in your scalp release oils that should be distributed throughout your hair on a regular basis so that they do not build up on you scalp and suffocate the skin there. Build up will cause irritation and will trap dead skin cells that would normally shed unnoticed. When you brush your hair from the scalp downward, you’ll move some of the oil away from your scalp, avoiding buildup and moisturizing the rest of your hair

Rest & De-stress. When your body is physically or mentally taxed, it can find interesting ways of letting you know – dandruff can be one of them. Inadequate rest and high stress levels can affect your hormones, which can in turn cause your dandruff to flare up. Try to get enough rest every day and find a safe and healthy way to keep your stress levels under control, such as cooking, reading, doing Yoga or meditating – whatever works for you.

Bring in the big guns. If you’re still having a lot of trouble after changing your diet and trying the above home remedies, it’s probably time to hit the store and pick up a good shampoo. But don’t expect any old shampoo to get the job done.
