5 Reasons to Try a Toner

Find out why you should be using toner today.

You've probably often heard instructions to “cleanse, tone and moisturize” your entire skincare career. And you’ve probably asked yourself if using a toner is truly necessary — especially if you have dry skin. While it’s true that toners balance oiliness, they do much more. Still not convinced? Here are five benefits of including toner in your regular skincare routine.

1. Cleaner Skin
Of course, your regularly scheduled face-wash is key for everyday cleansing , but even the best cleansers can leave some dirt and oil behind. Applying toner post-wash will ensure that lingering makeup and miscellaneous muck is completely wiped away. Think of it as extra insurance for your face: You know you’ll be going to bed with truly clean skin.

2. Smaller Pores
Looking for a way to hide large pores? An alcohol-free toner can help. It tightens pores after you cleanse, and with regular use, begins to minimize them. And here’s another pore-shrinking beauty tip: After removing cleanser with warm water, rinse once more with cool water. A cool rinse helps to close pores as well as stimulate circulation.

3. Restored pH Balance
You’ve probably heard the phrase “pH balance” thrown about, but what does it really mean? PH measures how acidic or basic something is on a scale of zero to 14. Solutions less than seven are acidic. Those greater than seven are basic. Skin should be somewhere around 5.4, and most toners are designed to help maintain this healthy pH balance. Toners can also improve the performance of serums and moisturizers, which should be applied when skin is still damp for best results.

4. Hydration and Anti-aging Assistance
Concerned about extra dry or aging skin? Moisturizers aren’t the only products that can help with these concerns. Toners that are water-based and contain ingredients such as rosewater and chamomile extracts, as well as Vitamin B derivatives such as panthenol, have great hydrating abilities. They can help lock in moisture, keep skin smooth and prevent foundation from becoming cakey when applied to your face.

5. Shine Control
Toners remove excess oil and work throughout the day to keep your skin shine free. If you have oily skin, opt for one with salicylic acid or witch hazel, which will prevent breakouts and help tighten pores.
