Ask the Experts: Can You Blame Your Genes?

Discover the real culprit of your skincare troubles with our beauty expert Q&A.

Is it me? Is it genetics? Who’s to blame? While genetics can play a role in aging, a good deal of how we look has to do with the way we care for our skin. Acne, wrinkles, fine lines, spots and more can all be helped and reduced with the proper products — regardless of your genes. We’ve answered some of your questions about how genes can affect your skin (and included some products that should help).

1. My mother is much more wrinkled than my grandmother was at her age. Does this mean I’ll be wrinkly, too? Or worse, even more wrinkly than mom?

Certain skin tendencies like wrinkling can be genetic, but the way you take care of your skin and protect it from the damaging rays of the sun can make a major difference. Perhaps your mom was a sun worshipper in her younger days whereas your grandmother stayed in the shade. Do your part to keep wrinkles at bay by using products with SPF every day, even when it’s overcast.

Try Olay’s ProX Age Repair Lotion with SPF 30. Not only will this hydrate your skin to fight the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, but it will protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.

2. My three sisters and I all have super-dry skin; it must be hereditary. Do we have any hope to achieve soft, supple skin?

It’s certainly possible that dry skin is a family trait, but it could also be due to where you live. That doesn’t mean you are destined for a sandpaper complexion, though. You can change the texture and moisture level of your skin with the right products.

Reduce that tight feeling caused by dry skin and add major moisture to your skin with Olay’s ProX Hydra Firming Cream. You’ll notice a change in the elasticity and firmness in your skin as the product plumps and hydrates. Don’t forget to share this tip with your sisters!

3. I always thought I’d have baby-soft skin even as I got older, since my grandmother’s cheeks still feel like a baby’s bottom! Unfortunately, my skin feels much rougher. How can I get grandma’s delicate skin?

Sometimes we are lucky to get those positive traits passed down from past generations, but even if we do, environmental factors can contribute to a less-than-desirable effect. You can still have that amazingly soft skin just like grandma by exfoliating. Use Olay’s ProX Advanced Cleansing System to purify, renew and smooth skin’s texture. One day, your own grandkids will be in awe of your youthful looks!

4. Every woman in my family has crow’s feet. They are all beautiful women, but I don’t want to sport those same fine lines. Am I destined for those same crinkly eyes?

Since every woman in your family has the same pair of crow’s feet, it may very well be a genetic influence. But then again, lots of women (and men) are troubled by those fine lines in the eye area. Eye cream applied twice a day is a great way to protect and hydrate the delicate skin around the eyes. Olay’s ProX Eye Restoration Complex is mild enough for the eye area and will help you reduce the signs of aging

5. I don’t know if my mom has dark spots from too much sun exposure or if it is genetic, but I see some appearing on my face and I don’t like it! Can I get rid of these?

Dark spots can be hereditary or from too much exposure to the sun. You can, however, improve the unevenness of your skin with a great toner. Olay’s ProX Tone Correcting Protocol restores even color to the skin, revealing a brighter complexion.

6. I am in my late 30s and I still get breakouts! I thought those days would be over decades ago. Will I ever have clear skin?

Acne-prone skin can run in families, and as you have witnessed first-hand, it isn’t just a teenage issue. By keeping your skin clean and free of dirt and oil, you can make a big difference in bouts of breakouts and pimple eruptions. Try Olay’s ProX Microdermabrasion Plus Advanced Cleansing System for youthful, brighter skin. This system will help remove dirt and other environmental residue, which tend to clog pores.

7. My mom is gorgeous and has always embraced aging gracefully. I once decided to do so too, but now I regret these deep wrinkles I have. Can I turn back the clock?

You can’t turn back time, but you can reduce the appearance of even the deepest of wrinkles. Olay’s ProX Deep Wrinkle Treatment is professionally tested to combat deep lines and wrinkles by penetrating deep into the skin’s surface. You’ll feel even more gorgeous when you feel confident, too!
