Exfoliate to Younger-Looking Skin

Exfoliate to Younger-Looking Skin

No matter what kind of skin you have, proper care can keep it at its best.

The cold weather during winter and early spring can really be harsh on your skin: Wind, dry air and artificial heat all take a toll. To combat the effects of “winter skin,” take a tip from the pros and make sure you exfoliate regularly.

Beyond the typical face-washing, exfoliating your skin will remove the dead cells that can make your face appear dull and help your skin look and feel its best.

There are several things you can do to help your skin stay healthy in the face of harsh conditions — and you don’t have to spend an arm and a leg to do it!

Be Consistent
If you have normal, dry, oily or combination skin, find the regimen of care that works for you, and stick with it. You might need to exfoliate daily or as little as one or two times each week. Whatever the routine, be consistent with it so you don’t end up with buildup.

Continue your normal face-washing routine and add an exfoliating schedule that meets your skin’s needs. When it’s time to exfoliate, use a brush or a washcloth to massage a dab of exfoliating cleanser onto your skin. Rinse with warm water and pat dry.

Gentle Scrub
You can purchase exfoliating face wash or make your own sugar scrub at home to gently clear your skin of dead cells. Remember to use soft, circular motions when exfoliating so you don’t irritate your skin. And if you start to see red patches or other signs of irritation, stop using the product until you can determine the cause of redness.

To make your own sugar scrub, you can combine a few simple ingredients from your kitchen such as brown sugar and honey. This is a great option if you are sensitive to chemicals.

Moisturize
If you typically wash your face in the shower, don’t forget to add moisturizer when you are done. It can be so easy to wash your face in the shower and forget to finish up with a nice moisturizing face cream. Hot water can actually dry out your skin, so you need the lotion right after you wash more than ever. Top it off with an anti-aging eye cream and you’re good to go.

Eye cream tip: When applying eye cream on the skin around your eyes, dab — not wipe — the cream on to reduce pulling, which leads to wrinkles.

Don’t Skimp on Sunscreen
Remember: The sun is still shining and emitting harmful rays even in the winter. Always use sunscreen before applying your makeup for the day to prevent premature aging and reduce the risk of sun-induced skin damage. In fact, you should apply sunscreen to any skin that will be exposed to the elements.

Taking a few steps to care for your skin is like giving yourself a gift each day. By starting and keeping great habits early on, you will be on your way to years and years of fresh, beautiful skin.
