How to Transition Your Skincare Routine for Fall

Tailor your skincare routine so your regimen preps you for the changing season.

Summer skincare is fairly simple: moisturize, apply SPF and regularly clean your face. But autumn is an excellent time to rethink that relaxed regimen. Follow these tips for transitioning your skincare routine for the colder months ahead.

Cool Cleansers
Save a buck or two on your skincare regimen when it comes to cleansers and soaps. Because you wash them off, there’s no need to invest in pricy formulas. Personally, I use a coconut oil soap that retails for a mere $3 and a single bar lasts me a year. I spend more on my moisturizers, which I’ll get to next.

Hydration Station
If your skin is dry or you’re concerned about early signs of aging (and who isn’t?), you may want to follow cleansing with a serum. Serums deliver a potent punch of hydrating ingredients directly to the skin.

If you have dry skin, apply both serum and moisturizer. If your skin is oily, skip the serum and use a moisturizer designed to address your needs, whether that’s acne, shine, flakiness or dryness. You want to apply a small amount while your skin is still wet for maximum effectiveness.

Alluring Eye Cream
Never forget eye cream! Apply it morning and night in a wing all the way toward your temples to eschew crow’s feet. Don’t neglect your lids or under eye, either. Many drugstore brands have great eye cream formulas. You can also use a thicker winter-worthy moisturizer as eye cream in a pinch.

Spiffy SPF
Just because the temps are cooler doesn’t mean you can skip this vital step. Always apply a layer of sunscreen over your moisturizer and reapply it throughout the day. You can also opt for a foundation with SPF to make sure you’re totally covered.

Exfoliation Nation
Sloughing off dead skin cells at least once a week is key to having healthy, smooth skin. An aesthetician once advised me to exfoliate every morning. I swear that when I stray from this, my pores get clogged immediately. I make sure to use a gentle scrub with round granules so as not to create micro-tears in my skin.
