The Easiest Ways to Up Your Skincare Game

The Easiest Ways to Up Your Skincare Game

Help your skincare stash bring its A-game with these easy, effective tips.

I’m a bit of a skincare junkie. I’ll try any lotion and potion out there claiming to turn back the hands of time, offer a glow, minimize pores, or reduce the appearance of dark spots. What I’ve failed to ever fully execute is properly applying these magical tonics at the right times, slapping on product with abandon … whenever I actually remember.

In an effort to turn over a new leaf (and maybe some skin cells), I set out to learn what’s really supposed to happen after cleansing is complete. I turned to Dr. Julia Tzu, director of Wall Street Dermatology in New York City, for a little guidance.

Hydrating the skin is oh so important, especially for moms suffering from little sleep. According to findings discussed at the International Investigative Dermatology Meeting in Edinburgh, Scotland, “Sleep-deprived women show signs of premature skin aging and a decrease in their skin’s ability to recover after sun exposure.”

Maximize it: For daytime, Tzu suggests applying just enough moisturizer to cover the face without leaving unabsorbed residue. For nighttime, however, she recommends liberal application. Do it right by using the finger pads on both hands to massage moisturizer onto the face in an upward motion.

Eye Cream
The skin underneath your eyes is different than the rest of your face – much thinner with fewer oil and water glands. That means one thing: Eye cream is essential.

Maximize it: Give yourself a double dose of eye cream daily, once in the morning and once at night. “Using your finger pads, gently apply a pea size drop of the eye cream to the lower lids of the eyes and spread in a horizontal motion,” advises Tzu.

Anti-Oxidant Serums
Anti-oxidant serums fight the good fight in an effort to give you healthy, glowing skin. These can include those labeled “anti-aging,” “anti-wrinkle,” and “vitamin C,” among others.

Maximize it: “Anti-oxidant serums can simply be applied in the morning,” says Tzu. “After washing the face and patting dry, apply a thin layer of the serum all over the face with the finger pads of both hands in a horizontal to upward motion. The key is not to pull the skin down towards where gravity is already pulling. Wait for the serum to dry prior to applying facial sunscreen. You know you have too much serum on if your face feels weighed down or suffocated by the serum.”

If you’re not already using retinols, you should be. They’re like the Renaissance Man of skincare – helping to increase collagen, even out discoloration, exfoliate, and reduce blackheads and whiteheads.

Maximize it: This big-time helper is strictly for nighttime. Tzu instructs women to apply a small amount to the face (avoiding the eye area) after washing, massaging it in a circular motion to help penetrate the pores. Because retinoids in general can irritate the skin, she advises following up with your nighttime moisturizer. “The moisturizer can help decrease the amount of irritation you may experience with the retinol,” she says.

Which part of your skincare regimen do you consider most important?
