Tips to Care for Our Skin This Winter!

Get MBIB’s tips for caring for our skin during the winter months.

The My Black is Beautiful team recently asked women in our community, “What beauty topics are most important to you?” And we heard you! So each month, we’ll tackle a new hot topic by sharing tips and ideas tailored to our beauty.

First up is (not surprisingly) skincare. Our skin is unique and beautiful, and each of us has our own distinct needs and preferences. Here are some of our most talked-about skincare needs, tips for how to address them, and – most importantly – how to own and preserve our beauty and give our skin the tender, loving care it needs most.

Dry Skin
Our skin is naturally on the dry side – especially during cold-weather months. There are hundreds of lotions out there, but they’re not the only solution.

Here are some everyday moisturizing tips:

  1. They feel great at the time, but hot showers can aggravate our skin. Try using lukewarm water and an in-shower moisturizer like Olay Ultra Moisture In-Shower Body Lotion.
  2. Though it sounds crazy, if you have very oily skin, don’t skip the moisturizer! It might sound counterintuitive, but when our skin doesn’t have enough moisture, it reacts by (you guessed it) producing more oil.
  3. Ashy skin around your elbows and knees can be a result of skin cell buildup. Use a gentle exfoliating body wash followed immediately by a moisturizer.

Dry Scalp
Speaking of dry skin, the skin hidden underneath your hair shouldn’t be ignored! To get ahead of the itch before it happens, try Head & Shoulders Moisture Care collection – it’s designed specifically for our textured hair. And with the My Black is Beautiful seal of approval, you know it’s approved for us by women like us!

Hyperpigmentation
Those dark spots on our skin, called hyperpigmentation, occur when skin gets damaged and, after healing, new skin cells overproduce melanin. Our skin already contains a lot of melanin, so when these cells overproduce, the effect is a noticeable dark spot. Products like Olay Regenerist Luminous Tone Perfecting Cream can help fade them.

Ingrown Hairs
When body hair is shaved or plucked, it doesn’t completely make it out of the follicle – and begins growing downward or sideways underneath your skin, causing an ingrown hair.

If ingrown hairs are a recurring problem, head to a dermatologist. They can prescribe treatments and safely remove ingrown hairs.

To help prevent future ingrown hairs on your body, try these simple tips:

  1. Exfoliation is key, and shaving does just that! The gentle removal of dead skin along with unwanted hair is a double duty feat of beauty that yields soft, healthy looking skin.
  2. Shave at the end of your showers – and with warm water, not hot. Hair is softer and pores are more relaxed from the heat, making ingrown hairs less likely.
  3. Pressing hard can cut hairs below skin level, making them more likely to become ingrown. Let an outstanding razor – like Venus Embrace – do the work for you. Use a light touch to get a relaxing and close shave.

Wrinkles
We’ve all heard “black don’t crack,” but the truth is that while our skin tends to wrinkle less than lighter skin, everyone is different. And other factors, like sun exposure and genetic skin elasticity, can come into play.

Olay Regenerist Micro-sculpting Cream can help renew and preserve our skin’s youthfulness. Just remember to embrace your skin’s natural beauty at every age. A fine line here and there is a beautiful reminder of everything you’ve accomplished.
