Moisture 101: In Search of Silky Soft Skin

If you walk down the beauty products aisle, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with all the body creams, butters and oils on the shelves. To get the most out of your products, read on to learn what moisturizers work best — and where to use them.

Don’t Miss an Inch
Because your body doesn’t have oil glands everywhere you have skin, you can dry out without regular moisturizing. (Your forearms, hands and legs have fewer oil glands than your back, for example.)

The ideal time to apply moisturizers is just after a bath or shower, when your skin is still damp and will absorb the product. If you make it into a habit, you’ll be rewarded with silky, soft skin.

Be Wary of Scented Moisturizers
Many perfumes have moisturizer counterparts. But if your skin is sensitive to fragrances and preservatives, choose a product suitable for sensitive skin.

Body Oils
Body oils have a finer texture than lotions or creams, which lets your body absorb it quickly and deeply.

Apply body oil to damp skin after a bath or shower and allow it a few seconds to be absorbed. Seal in the moisture with a lotion or body butter. This method prevents dryness, itching or roughness and protects your skin against dehydration all day.

Modern body oils are not actually oily, and many of them are described as dry oils — so fine you can spritz them on.

Lotions tend to have a milky or gel texture and are more like liquid. A body lotion is easy to apply — it sits lightly on the skin and is quickly absorbed. You don’t need to wait before getting dressed. It’s the ideal choice if your skin is oily, as the formulations contain less oil and more water.

Many lotions not only moisturize but also help keep your skin feeling young and firm thanks to new ingredients that rehydrate and revitalize skin cells.

Body Butters
These thick, nourishing, rich creams or butters feed the skin more intensely than a lotion. They are not fluid and take a bit more work to rub into the skin. They’re particularly good for rough elbows, knees, torso, heels, forearms and calves. Apply the butter to damp skin then give the skin time (about three minutes) to absorb the cream while you do your makeup, and your skin will be soft and moisturized the whole day.

Use a spatula to scoop out your body butter as every time you plunge your fingers into the pot you spread bacteria and shorten the life span and efficacy of your product
