Skincare Advice for the Outdoors

Follow our 3 top tips to keeping your skin happy and healthy when outside.

There’s no doubt that enjoying the great outdoors, feeling the sun on our skin and spending time with nature can be hugely stress relieving and beneficial to our health. Recent studies have shown that just a 30-minute walk outside can lower our heart rate and make us feel more positive and relaxed.

But before you get your walking boots on, don’t forget to protect your skin from the elements by brushing up on your skincare regimen.

1. Plan Ahead
Aim to go out when the sun isn’t at its strongest – plan your walks for the early morning or mid to late afternoon. That way you can avoid harsh sunlight and potential skin damage. Having a few essentials to hand will save your skin from the effects of the weather, too: a protective lip balm will help prevent your lips from drying out, and if you’re outdoors for longer than an hour in strong sun, don’t forget to reapply sunscreen. Even in the winter, UV rays can cause eye damage, so it’s a good idea to carry your favorite pair of sunglasses in case the sun makes an appearance. Of course, always carry a bottle of water to help stay hydrated.

2. Protect Your Skin
Sunshine boosts our levels of vitamin D, but too much sunshine can cause skin aging and even skin cancer. Always use an SPF cream, even on an overcast day, as the sun’s rays can penetrate through clouds. The most effective products are labeled “broad spectrum,” which means they protect from both UVA and UVB rays. Pick a daily moisturizer with (broad spectrum) SPF built in, that way you don’t even need to think about it. Olay Total Effects 7-in-1 Anti-Aging Moisturizer with Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 30 is an ideal choice.

3. Treat and Repair
After a day spent braving the elements, your skin will need extra TLC when you get home. Avoid washing your face in hot water, as this will strip the skin of moisture. Instead, use a gentle exfoliator and wipe off with a washcloth and lukewarm water to remove any dead skin cells and prep the skin for moisture. Then take two minutes to massage a moisturizing serum into your skin, working your way up from your décolletage to your forehead in circular motions, followed by a soothing moisturizer. The Olay Regenerist range is a good option – your skin will thank you for the extra effort with a healthy glow!
