10 Tips for Keeping Your Wardrobe in Top Shape

Keep your wardrobe in shape and closet organized with these ten tips.

Retail therapy, fluctuating sizes and changing trends can all lead to an exploding closet. We love to shop — and love to have wardrobe options — but if you are holding onto clothes that no longer fit or you never intend to wear, it's time for a change. Check out our 10 tips for keeping your wardrobe in shape (and knowing when it's time to let go).

1. Celebrate Weight-Loss Success by Donating Old Items to Charity.
A few years ago, I went from a size 14 to a size 2. I was elated, but all of the sudden I had a whole bunch of clothes that didn't fit. It was tempting to hang onto that old wardrobe, worried that my weight would climb again. It was a mistake. Keeping those larger clothes acts as a crutch.

2. Use Different Types of Hangers for Different Types of Clothing
We'd never wear the same shoes for all occasions, and the same holds true for hangers. Those great old-school wooden hangers are perfect for your winter coats. Be careful, however: Those same wooden hangers can snag and ruin lighter items, such as blouses made of silk or rayon.

3. All Clothing is Not Created Equally
Just as all hangers are not to be treated the same, neither should the clothes we put on them. Fold sweaters and shirts, and store them on shelves to avoid stretching. Suits, dresses and skirts should be hung.

4. Take Care of Clothes You Love and They'll Love You Back
Decide on a case-by-case basis whether you should dry-clean, handwash or put an item into the washing machine. A great dress should go to the dry cleaner to keep it beautiful for years to come.

5. Schedule Regular Closet Clean-Outs
Take time to free up space in your closet by exchanging seasonal clothing. This can make you feel like you have new clothes because you haven't seen them in a while, and also give you a good idea of what you're actually wearing. Remember, if you stumble across an item you haven't worn in a year or longer, it might be time to donate it.

6. Embrace Your Gray Side
As you transition into a new season, shop for pieces in shades of gray (not to be confused with a certain scandalous paperback!) that complement your complexion and hair. While you are at it, buy one great new dress that will last several seasons, since gray (unlike yellow, purple or apricot) will always have a home in any wardrobe.

7. Know When to Let Go
Throw out anything that's stained, torn or you haven't worn in the last year. If you find yourself thinking, "One day, I might be that small again," get rid of it.

8. Clean your closet regularly.
Keep your closet neat by vacuuming regularly and only storing items like suitcases — which can easily be rolled away — directly on the floor, as this will avoid dust from clinging to the hems of your favorite clothes. While you're in there, make sure everything has a home. Instead of a pile of shoes or purses, compartmentalize these items. This way they won't get damaged and they will have a designated place to return to at the end of the day.

9. Make a Vision Board — for Your Wardrobe
How do you want to look? Write out your image goals once a year and refer to them often. When you're shopping for new clothes, ask yourself if the item in question matches your desired image. Think of this as an opportunity to rethink your shopping habits. Instead of going to your usual stores, explore — even if all you do is look. You will get an idea of different options and may be inspired to try some new styles.

10. Reward yourself!
Completed all your tasks and your closet looks fresh and clean? Reward yourself by buying a new piece (that aligns with your vision board, of course).
