5 French Riviera-Inspired Summer Looks

Even if you can't jet off to the south of France for vacation, you can look the part.

French Riviera fashion is all about retro, nautical glamor. Even if you can't jet off to the south of France for vacation, you can still look the part. Try one of the three outfit ideas below and it will almost feel as if you're sailing around the sun-splashed Cote d'Azur.

1. Stripes
Stripes are the most obvious way to go nautical. Pair a striped tee or blouse with skinny jeans and boat shoes for the day. Or try your lined top with a pleated skirt and sandals. At night, you can wear the same blouse with wide-leg pants for an effortless yet fashionable look. Prefer a dress? Look for blue or navy bands to look more yacht club than mod.

2. Oversized Hats
Embrace your inner movie star with a large, floppy hat. There are even styles that fold up compactly without creasing just in case you do get to travel overseas. A major bonus? These wide-brimmed hats shield your face from harmful UV rays. Who said you can't be stylish and practical?

3. Sailor Buttons
Whether they're on shorts, a blazer or pants, gold buttons instantly add a nautical element to any look. If the fasteners are on shorts or pants, pair the garment with a white blazer to look très chic. Too hot for a jacket? Try a pair of navy sailor-style shorts with a simple tee. For a gold-buttoned blazer, try sporting it over a striped dress for full-on French Riviera glam. Or contrast its structured shape with a more romantic ruffled dress for a more conceptual look.

4. Espadrilles
Espadrille sandals are inarguably French. Neutral versions lengthen the legs, while a bold color like yellow or red adds a playful element to your outfit. Look for espadrilles that lace up at the ankle to really get into the spirit of the south of France.

5. Scarves
A printed scarf is incredibly versatile. Tie one around your neck for a classic French look (it also helps avoid sunburn!). Wrap one around the handles of your tote to add a pop of color. If you're by the pool, you can even use the scarf as a head wrap to protect your highlights from the sun. The possibilities are endless!

You can wear each piece above separately, or combine all five for a head-to-toe French Riviera outfit. Not a fan of the more involved items above? Try keeping it simple with a pair of white jeans and a navy blouse. It will give that effortless French feel with just a hint of a nautical touch.
