5 Make-Up Must-Haves for Moms on a Budget

5 Make-Up Must-Haves for Moms on a Budget

Get these budget-friendly essentials and get out the door quick — and looking great.

Whether you’re chasing your kids around the playground or meeting clients in the boardroom, moms need a quick and easy routine for putting on a pretty face. With only five items in your makeup bag, you can have everything you need to (beautifully!) face whatever the day throws your way.

1. Moisturizer
Just as a painter preps a canvas, applying moisturizer primes your complexion for the makeup to follow. Best bets when shopping are non-comedogenic formulas that won’t clog pores, preferably with the added benefit of SPF. Tinted moisturizers add a tiny bit of coverage and color, too. When shopping for moisturizer, keep in mind lower-priced choices aren’t necessarily a value nor are expensive brands automatically better. One way to gauge is to check the ounces to see if the moisturizer is heavily concentrated — as a little may go a long way.

2. Concealer and Foundation
Concealer is key for covering everything from blemishes to dark circles to broken capillaries around your nose or rosacea on your cheeks. To find one that matches your skin tone, first find the right shade of foundation. Here’s how: At the store, apply foundation to your face (not the back of your hand), without any makeup on. Use a makeup sponge to dab the product along your jaw line, then step outside so you can view the shade in natural light. You want the color to fade into your skin tone. Once you’ve found your match, choose a concealer that’s slightly lighter (but don’t go too light, or you’ll run the risk of looking like a raccoon). As you’ll likely be using your foundation and concealer every day, they are the two items in your cosmetics case that are worth the splurge for the right color and texture.

3. Lip Gloss
A dab of gloss makes your lips — and your smile — look brighter, so it’s one of the top morning make-up must-haves. The great thing about lip gloss is, in addition to endless color options, they can come cheap, so you can throw a couple in your kit. Not sure which shades are right for you? Unlike concealer, when choosing a lip-gloss hue, go a shade or two darker than your natural lip color. For darker complexions, browns and purples look great. Pinks and nudes work best for lighter complexions. Again, natural light is your friend when it comes to choosing makeup shades — don’t rely on the store’s fluorescent lights or you may be in for a surprise once you hit the street.

4. Mascara
Adding a touch of mascara is all it takes to make your eyes pop. But with so many kinds to choose from these days, which one’s right for you? Luckily, mascara is a product you can save a few bucks on and pick up great budget options. You might have to experiment a bit before you find your perfect match, but here’s a quick guide:

Lengthening mascaras have long, comb-like bristles that add more product to lash tips. Want thicker-looking lashes? Look for a volumizing product with thicker bristles on the wand. To separate lashes and avoid clumping, opt for a lighter-weight formula with wider-spaced bristles. What about waterproof? Well, unless you’re heading to the pool or a tearjerker flick, skip waterproof mascara, which can be more irritating and harder to wash off.

5. Blush
Blush earns a spot as one of your makeup essentials, since just a couple of quick strokes can turn your complexion from blah to bright. Too many shades to choose from? Here’s a quick tip to help narrow the field: Pinch your cheeks (not too hard) and select the hue that best matches the color your skin turned. Always remember to smile as you apply so the blush lands on the proper part of your cheek, not too close to the nose or eyes. There are tons of blushes out there at all price points so experiment with a couple to find one or two you absolutely love.

These five essentials will get you fabulous in just minutes — no matter where you are. If you have any tips, other favorite must-haves, let us know in the comments below!
