Comfortable Jeans You Can Wear Day to Night

Get the best of both worlds: genuinely comfortable jeans that you can dress up.

We dress-up a lot less these days. Many of us have even rid our wardrobes of suits for the office and opted for more comfortable options such as jeans, leggings and dare we say it, sweat pants. While everyday can’t be a jeans day, it may be the perfect time to find the best jeans to wear to last you from day to night — because casual could turn dressy at a moment’s notice. When shopping for jeans that can transition from day to night, there are a few things to consider.

What wash to wear
Dark-wash jeans are a bit more dressed and refined, almost blending as navy pants. They’re also more slimming than their lighter counterparts and far more chic than other washes. Dark washes also tend to hold their color better in areas that get worn easier. Darker jeans can be dressed up and accessorized for evenings out more easily, too. Remember to always wash your dark jeans inside-out to keep the color from fading.

Stretch it out
For the most comfort, look for jeans that have a bit of stretch throughout the legs and waist. Generally, these types of “stretchy” jeans have some sort of elastic fiber blended into the cotton. This miracle of a fabric elevates the pants we already considered most casual (to wear in public, at least) to, sometimes, almost sweats-level comfort. As a dark wash with a dressy top, these jeans can be your best friend.

All jeans expand as the day goes on, but jeans with a little more elasticity will move more easily and keep their shape better as the day moves into night, helping not only to keep you moving, but also keeping their sharp look.

Consider your feet
Because you want to be comfortable day and night, if you’re planning to change your shoes before going out for the evening, consider the style of your jeans — bootcut jeans will be just as comfortable with stilettos as they will with clogs, as will some straight-leg jeans. If you’re planning to switch to boots at night, avoid boyfriend jeans, as the pant legs likely won’t fit well over or tucked into the boots.

Comfortable waist and rise
When you’re trying on your jeans, make sure you sit in them for longer than a minute — feel free to check your email or Facebook while you’re there in the dressing room. The sitting serves a purpose, though: As you sit and get distracted, your body and jeans will naturally shift. After a few minutes, stand up again. Are your jeans still fitting your correctly in the rise and waist, or are they cutting into your curves? Do you feel the need to hoist the belt or are you pulling them down over your thighs? If they aren’t comfortable after two minutes, you certainly won’t want to continue wearing them for nine or more hours.

The most versatile item in your closet
A nice pair of jeans can be an investment item and could be pretty expensive when it comes to denim. But consider your investment — will it be versatile? Will one pair replace multiple must-have items in your wardrobe? Consider not only the longevity of the jean, but how and when you plan to wear them.
