How to Pick One Perfect Piece for Layering

Here are four great ways to style a shirt that will stay stylish throughout the seasons.

Layering is key during the spring and summer months. Even if it's sweltering hot during the day, temperatures can quickly drop after the sun sets, and you don’t want to get stuck feeling chilly during the evening. Enter the art of layering, and one fashion staple that's easy to layer is a chambray shirt.

Chambray is a major trend for spring and summer. Recently on the runways, one designer paired a denim shirt with a white leather skirt for a fresh, polished look. Another big-time brand showed chambray in all forms, pairing it with lace on feminine dresses. And yet another popular trend in the tents were denim button-ups layered under a sweater for a relaxed feel.

To get the most use out of your chambray top, choose a light or medium-weight fabric. A thick denim is great as a jacket, but harder to a layer. You also want to pay attention to details. While studs can look cool, they'll peek out under a sweater. So try to find a classic top with regular buttons or small metal snaps.

1. Buttoned Up
Layer a chambray shirt under a cardigan or sweater for the cooler months. The denim gives a relaxed feel while the collar still looks polished. Lace is very on trend, and can gives denim a nice girlie contrast. Plus, it's fun to see the fabric peek through a cardigan.

2. Jacket Alternative
A denim shirt can double as a lightweight jacket when you leave it unbuttoned. Layer it over a T-shirt or dress. Then, use accessories to liven up your look. You can add some color with a pair of statement earrings or some shine with a sparkly bib necklace.

3. Beach Day
A denim shirt is a great cover-up at the beach. You can tie it over your summer dress, or you can slip it on over your bikini when you're getting too much sun. And since it doesn't wrinkle, you can even roll it up as pillow to prop under your head as you're laying out in the sun!

4. Double Denim
A chambray shirt looks great layered with other denim pieces. The trick to not looking like you're fresh out of the '80s is in the accessories you choose. Make sure to either add metallic accents or a pop of color to your look.

Not a fan of denim? You can follow all these tips with a plain oxford shirt. While white is a classic, a bold color will help liven up any wardrobe.
