Upgrade Your Look for Less

Upgrade Your Look for Less

Use these tips to boost your style — without spending lots of time and money.

Whether you’re dropping off the kids at school, racing around doing errands or heading off to work, a few simple upgrades can boost your look — and maybe even your attitude. Here are a couple of wardrobe tricks that’ll have you turning heads in no time.

Update Your Active Wear
Lots of moms spend much of the day running around in exercise clothing and for good reason. First, those outfits are super comfortable, and secondly, being dressed for a workout makes it more likely that you’ll actually fit one in. These days, many manufacturers make fashionable active wear that doubles as regular clothing, so banish those baggy sweats and T-shirts, and change your look with fitted tops and body-flattering bottoms, topped with a cozy hoodie or lightweight jacket.

Upgrade your Underwear
Every woman knows that if your under-things make you feel pretty, your whole outlook can improve. So ditch the granny panties and anything in your lingerie drawer with holes, stains or loose elastic. Upgrading doesn’t have to mean giving up on comfort — for everyday wear, get an assortment of cotton panties with fun patterns, colors or even a bit of lace.

Get Jeans that Really Fit
Everyone’s got a favorite pair of broken-in, playground-ready jeans. But for a day or night out, invest in a pair that flatters your figure and beautifully offsets whatever you wear on top. A darker wash looks dressier (and more slimming) and when paired with pumps or strappy sandals, can be as chic as a little black dress. Also consider changing your look with different lengths and cuts — ankle skimmers look totally modern, bootlegs are flirty and fun.

Punch Up a Basic
It doesn’t take a lot to turn a plain button-down into something special. Wear your shirt with a short patterned skirt and ballet flats, or a long flowing skirt and comfortable wedges. Or throw on a chunky necklace, silky scarf or shiny belt and you suddenly go from simple to sophisticated. These pairings work just as well with a fitted white T-shirt or a lightweight crewneck sweater.

Update Your Closet
Do a weed-out, tossing items you haven’t worn for a while to make room for a few new pieces that’ll revitalize your wardrobe. If your body has changed since your last closet clean-out, toss clothes that no longer fit. Instead, invest in items that flatter the way you look now. Check out a few magazines for a trend you love, then buy one fabulous item, be it a bright red bag or a pair of zebra flats.

Do A Two-Minute Makeup Blitz
Going au naturale is absolutely fine, but if you want to brighten your look a bit before you face the world, here are three small steps that’ll make a big difference:

  • Apply a quick sweep of mascara to lash tips to open those (still sleepy) eyes
  • Lightly dab blush on the apples of your cheeks as you smile
  • Pat on a sheer lip gloss to make your smile pop.
