As a fashion stylist, I always look forward to New York Fashion Week and the runway shows around the world. So many incredible trends come out of these shows, setting the bar for style globally. Now, I get to share with you how I get ready for the shows, some trends we can expect to see this year and how you can incorporate them into your closet.
How I Prepare
First, I look back to what was shown in previous collections by all the fashion houses and designers. This research helps me understand upcoming trends and what we’ll see worn on the streets by top fashion influencers, bloggers and editors. Though I always look for what the big fashion houses are proposing and reinventing, but my main focus is on emerging designers – full of fresh new faces and ideas.
I look to Latin America – especially Colombia – that’s experiencing an exquisite boom of new designers in all types of fashion. Johanna Ortiz, Leal Daccarett, Ruven Afanador, Adriana Castro, Mercedes Salazar are a few of my favorites that are successfully breaking into the biggest fashion capitals.
From New York to London, get ready to see some bold trends! Stripes and “athleisure” will be back in full force, as designer brands make them stronger year after year. Moving onto Paris and Milan, geometric and feminine cuts are expected with ruffles and revealing shoulders. And last but not least, the loungewear trend – led by Francesca Ruffini’s Milan-based brand – because who’s not up for leaving the house in pajamas?! Simply throw on your favorite solid or printed pajama shirt, accessorize and you’re good to go!
We will also continue to see past trends come back, like one of my favorites – the use of personalized, customizable jackets as the outfit’s main statement piece. To add this trend to my closet, I grab my favorite jeans or jacket, start scouting around my accessories drawers for those old pins, brooches and patches, and voila – start sewing and customizing!
How You Can Incorporate
The incorporation of current fashion trends into one’s wardrobe is not as hard as we might imagine – It’s all about having fun and mixing high end with more affordable brands. Retailers have done an amazing job staying current with trends and delivering quality products without breaking our banks.
In addition, designer houses are starting to make more affordable luxury products by co-branding and collaborating with these mass-market retailers. Nowadays, it’s not about owning and sporting fresh-off-the-runway looks, but rather having a fun, consistent style that’s uniquely you!
