In the spring and summer, a mom needs a bunch of fun backup ideas to keep kids entertained, focused, and out of trouble when those sudden rainstorms hit. Here to inspire (and entertain) us all, 20 kids share their favorite ways to enjoy a rainy day.

1. “I like to watch TV. And pick my nose.” -- Maggie, 6

2. “Slip and slide in the mud, in our yard! We have this big area where the grass never grows. And so we get this GIANT mud puddle when it rains, and I go slide right in it!” -- Joe, 8 (FYI: When I asked the obvious follow-up question any mom would ask this kid, his reply was, “No, I don’t help with the laundry afterwards.”)

3. “Bowling. That’s the best! I’m so much better than my mom!” -- my daughter, Lina, 6

4. “Sometimes we draw on the walls.” -- Audrey, 4

5. “I like to put on my snorkel and fins and find puddles and pretend I’m underwater. … No, I don’t put on my bathing suit. Just the snorkel and fins. And my mask.” -- Sammy, 6

6. “Hang out with my friends and shop.” -- Jane, 16

7. “Swimming. Swimming in the rain is awesome!” -- Pia, 11

8. “One time, we baked brownies and cookies and made [marshmallow-cereal] treats. All in the same day! Because everything was canceled! That was the best rainy day ever!” -- Manu, 7

9. “I like to ski.” -- Leah, 7 (Yes, in the rain. In the spring.)

10. “Stay inside and have friends over. I like to play hide-and-seek when there are lots of people.” -- Aiden, 8
