6 Surprising & Fun Ways to Cool Down in the Heat

No private pool or beach membership — no problem! These cool activities are free!

When the temps soar, it can be hard to figure out what to do with your kids who are out of school and full of energy. You want them to have fun and enjoy a full day of summer activities, but it’s just too hot to go down a burning hot slide, run around a scorching meadow or yard, or play in the desert-like sand.

Here, seven ideas to save you and help you all have a fantastic time, all summer long. These are perfect ways to stay cool while still keeping busy and active, no matter what the thermometer reads!

1. Make frozen fruit kabobs: Making frozen fruit is a multitasking activity you can do together that will also keep everyone cool on a hot day. Just wash some berries and grapes, and have kids put them on kabob skewers. Then, pop them in the freezer for one or two hours. You can also cut up some other juicy fruit into small slices or cubes. Watermelon, peaches, apricots, nectarine, and mango are all delicious!

2. Throw a private pool party: If you don’t have access to a private, shady, cool pool (as most of us don’t), that’s OK. Turn your own bathroom and tub into a private pool for your kids for a day. Let them wear bathing suits and snorkel masks or swim goggles, for fun, and toss in some pool toys. Water balloons add a whole other element of crazy to this pretend fun. And if the temp’s extremely high, throw in a few ice cubes for an extra cool ‑- or even refreshingly chilly -- day of summer fun.

3. Color the shower: Get some washable paint and tub crayons or chalk, put your kids in bathing suits and flip flops, and let them draw murals all over your shower and tub walls for fun. Cleanup is easy and fast, and making art while staying cool is always fun when it’s too hot to play outside.

4. Play with water balloons: I always try to remember to keep some of these on hand for days when it’s too hot to do anything. Just let your kids fill up the balloons and run around outside, throwing them at each other (or you, if you’re sweltering!). It’s a fun, fast, easy way for little ones to burn off extra energy and cool down all at once.

5. Have a shadow dance-off: When you need to stay inside with a bunch of active kids, having a shadow-dance party or dance-off is always fun. Just blast the AC and feel-good tunes, then pick a large, empty wall, or hang a couple of sheets up as your shadow “stage.” Shine a bright light from behind, and boogie down while your shadows copy you on the wall!

6. Turn your AC or fan into a bubble-blowing machine! Blowing bubbles directly toward a wall AC unit that is cranking, or a fan that is spinning, will make the bubbles fly up all over the room in a hurry. Have a bubble-popping contest while you cool down, all at once. It’s sure to make for an awesome time!
