6 Tips to Help You Kick off the New Year Right

This six-part foolproof plan will help you start the new year off right.

The new year gives us a fresh start. It’s both a clean slate and a time to reflect on what we accomplished in the past 365 days. Perhaps you’re happy with what you’ve achieved, or perhaps a few resolutions slipped through the cracks. These seven simple tactics will help you with your goals — no matter how this past year turned out.

1. Prioritize Your Top Three Goals
We all have a list of goals we want to achieve, but between caring for the family, endless work projects and social obligations, we often put ourselves last. It’s never intentional, but somehow our resolutions fall by the wayside year after year.

My excuse is always the same: “I couldn’t find the time.” Sound familiar?

This is exactly why it’s important to prioritize. Ask yourself two questions. “What three things would I like to focus on this year?” and, “What do I most want to change or improve about myself?”

Write your answers down and hang them in a place you’ll see them regularly — it’ll keep them at the front of your mind.

2. Schedule Time for You
With all of life’s distractions, it’s easy to simply forget about your resolutions or to put them on the backburner.

To solve this, block time off in your calendar — whether that’s in your work calendar, on your smartphone or in an old-fashioned agenda — just make sure you will see it. Be aware that you may have to change your daily routine to accommodate your goals, but when the going gets tough, remind yourself why you’re doing this.

Keep your eye on the prize. Finding time is more than half the battle.

3. Enlist Support
Spend a night with your family and plan your goals together. If your children are young, share your hopes and dreams with your significant other, best friend or family member. Offer this person your support in return, and create some sort of visible rendition of your goal so you’re reminded of it daily.

For example, leave your sneakers out if you want to go for a workout in the morning, hang up that bathing suit, or pack your lunch the night before if you’re trying to eat healthier or save money.

If your children are old enough to have their own goals, ask them to share with the family. Discuss each family member’s goals, list them on a board and hang it somewhere everyone can see. Having the whole family come up with these goals motivates everyone to see them through.

4. It’s OK to Get out of Your Comfort Zone
It’s really tough to get out of bed and head to the gym when it’s still dark outside (where’s the coffee?), but by the time you’re finished working out, you’ll feel energized and ready to start the day.

5. Be Quick to Forgive Yourself
On the same note, know how to listen to your body and your mind. If you’ve pushed all week and just can’t bear the thought of pounding the treadmill today, don’t beat yourself up over it.

Instead, use the time you’ve blocked off wisely, whether that’s extra sleep, cuddle time or just a little extra padding to your morning. It’s OK and normal to miss a day here and there so long as you don’t abandon your goals altogether.

6. Let Your Progress Motivate You
No matter your goal, making progress feels good. The minute you feel yourself slipping back into your old ways is when you should lean into your support system and remind yourself why you made this decision.

Think back to how you felt when you made this resolution one of your top three? Harness that energy, keep it in your mind, visualize your goal and push through. Once you’ve been able to see or feel positive results, the daily motivation becomes easier.
