Winter is a season of romance. Colder weather naturally has us getting closer and coming up with new, creative date ideas. Combined with the schedule overload of holiday dinners and parties, it’s nice to find some time to escape for a relaxing retreat.

Many people go off to islands or warmer climates for extended vacations, but you don’t have to go that far to enjoy a lovely little jaunt. A weekend getaway is the perfect time to explore great places in your city or nearby areas.

Planning ahead, of course, is the key to having a wonderful getaway perfect for you both. My husband and I take a spontaneous trip here and there, but a little planning always helps. Simply determine a budget, pick a date and make any special arrangements for children or pets.

There are an infinite number of ideas for a great couples’ getaway, but here are some perfect for winter.

1. Sleepy Beach Towns
Take advantage of the off-season and visit a nearby beach or coastal town. You might not be able to get in the water, but the views will still be beautiful. Businesses won’t be crowded with tourists, so getting a table overlooking the ocean will be easy!

2. Cabin Stay in the Mountains
The traditional winter escape to a snowy cabin with a fireplace is definitely romantic. Plan to spend the entire weekend indoors or, if weather permits, venture outdoors for a hike. Hot cocoa and roasting marshmallows by the fire are a must.

3. Metropolitan Retreat
Stay downtown for a weekend and enjoy all your city has to offer. Go to a live performance, visit museums or attend a game if you’re both sports fans. Visit an ice skating rink and spend the afternoon gliding hand in hand. Try new restaurants, cafes, shops and stay in a hotel with gorgeous views of the city skyline. Without all the regular travel expenses, you can be a little extravagant — treat yourself like a tourist in your own city. You never know what you’ll find!

4. Bed and Breakfasts
Stay at a nearby inn or bed and breakfast for a wonderful weekend away. In the off-season, overnight availability should be easy to find. Scout out a great restaurant and do some sightseeing — find out what the town is known for.

5. Ski Resort
A getaway for the more active couple, visit a local ski resort. Oftentimes, weekend passes and hotels will offer a discount when purchased together. Spending the day out in the snow definitely allows you to take advantage of the season.

6. Spa Vacation
As mentioned earlier, winter can be quite an exhausting season with holidays dominating your schedule and mind. A weekend spent lounging and being pampered together is the ultimate getaway. Try a couples’ massage or lounge by an indoor pool for a relaxing weekend.

7. Romantic Weekend at Home
All of the above trips are wonderful, but sometimes it’s nice to just stay home. Instead of going out to eat, plan gourmet meals you can cook together, watch your favorite movies, play board games and create a playlist of music you both love. Put away the laptops, tablets and phones and enjoy each other’s company in the home you’ve created.

Any of these getaway ideas will bring you closer together and give you a break from the stress of the holidays. Remember no matter where you go, the main thing is to enjoy each other’s company and the beauty winter has to offer.
