Caring About Clean Water: One Mother’s Story

Read one Kenyan mom’s struggle to provide clean water for her children.

In today’s fast-paced life, it’s sometimes hard to appreciate the daily conveniences that make life easier, like 24/7 services, access to communications, access to transportation, or even something as basic as clean drinking water.

The unfortunate reality is that nearly 700 million people in the world don’t have access to safe drinking water. From mom to mom, one mother’s story about providing clean water for her family will inspire you to rise above even your most difficult everyday challenges.

Rose Odhiambo Machowe lives in rural Kenya. She and her husband are both HIV positive, but she hasn’t let that impact the care she provides for her two children. Rose knows dirty, contaminated water can be detrimental to her children’s health, and that’s why she collects dirty water from the nearest source and purifies it herself so her children can avoid diarrheal illness and other diseases that could keep her children from their schooling.

For more than nine years, Rose has diligently treated her family’s water with P&G Purifier of Water packets, through the P&G Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program, which helps provide clean water to people like Rose. Despite her illness, Rose has managed to live an optimistic life as a role model for her family and community. Now, Rose’s children are thriving and do not miss school due to diarrheal illness. She is very proud of her son, who graduated to post-secondary studies, and her daughter who is in high school.

Since having clean water has had such a positive impact on her and her children, Rose now trains her community on how to use the P&G packets with the help of a local organization called Safe Water and AIDS Project (SWAP). With her SWAP training, Rose became an entrepreneur and active promoter of community health. She now sells the P&G Purifier of Water packets alongside other water treatment options and health products from a kiosk and by visiting people at their home and providing health information. She also teaches at a local school and actively supports the health/HIV program at her local church.

“I really feel happy inside my heart,” said Rose. “I really feel encouraged because I try to change the lives of other people.” Rose was able to turn a devastating diagnosis and potential life of illness into a personal and community transformation. Her motivation to help others can become an inspirational reminder of our own power to not only change our personal circumstances, but to improve others’ as well.
