My Child and I Are Complete Opposites – What a Gift!

My Child and I Are Complete Opposites – What a Gift!

One mom shares what she has learned from her child, who is her opposite.

When my kid was 4 years old, her summer vacation ambitions were to climb Mount Everest and create a vacuum that could clean the oceans and beaches. When I was 4, and even 14, and dare I admit, probably also at 24, my wildest ambitions were to dye my hair, be a ski bum, or become a race jockey. My child will wring her little hands with worry, and cry for hours about a vaccine. I was the kid who tried to stitch my own wounds and looked for places to donate blood. I think you get the picture. We are total opposites.

In real life, if we were kids at the same time, I don’t think we would have gotten along very well. My daughter is extremely musical, graceful, intellectual, and deeply thoughtful while I was busy being a tomboy and seeing how fast I could race anyone. But since this amazing little opposite of mine happens to also be the person I love more than anything in the entire world, I’ve been nothing but thrilled -- if not often challenged -- by parenting her, and I’m happy to say that, despite the difficulties, I’ve learned a lot from my child’s opposite personality!

I’ve learned what is nature and what changes with nurture. I’ve learned to accept, and value, the things I cannot change, both in me and in my child. I’ve learned that being around someone totally different from you all the time, and loving them more than anything, helps you see the world in a whole new, much brighter light. I’ve learned that grace is something you are born with, and that toughness is something that comes with experience. I’ve learned that in my child, I can see both the child I never was and the adult I aspire to be, in many ways. I’ve learned that there is nothing greater, or more consuming, than a mother’s love, no matter how different you might be from your own child.

Is your child the opposite of you? What have you learned from him or her?
