Success Stories From Mi Familia

Hear ways to connect with your family while giving to the larger community, together.

Family time is essential. Whether you’re spending time giving back with your loved ones or enjoying downtime at home, time spent with la familia is priceless. While many may opt for a family activity that includes a nice dinner at a restaurant, salsa dancing beachside and/or a vacation, among many other things, giving back can be rewarding for you, your family and the larger community.

I’m the first to admit that I love going out, enjoying a nice meal or an excursion abroad, but giving back provides me with an indescribable feeling of fulfillment. My family and I have had successful gatherings at mis abuelos house in New York, and thousands of miles away in our native Honduras; however, the time several of us volunteered in a food pantry left a lasting mark upon my life. It taught me to not only be grateful, but also to give back.

Giving Back Full Circle
One day, at the age of 10, my mother spoke with my older brother and me about giving back to our community. We talked about different ways to impact our community, and, ultimately, decided to volunteer at a soup kitchen in the Bronx. We got up early on Saturday mornings to prepare plastic cutlery, napkins, food and the dining area to serve those in need of a warm meal. That small act of kindness taught me how important it is to give – give of your time and resources.

More than 10 years later, I walked into the same establishment ready to give a helping hand, again. While I’d volunteered at various places since then, it all started here. There’s no greater feeling than knowing you’ve fed thousands of people and met each and every one with a smile.

If you, too, are looking for an enjoyable way to spend time with your family — and give back to your community — try one of these acts of kindness:

Fundraise as a family: There are various causes, but perhaps there’s one that hits home for you and your familia. Settle on an organization, set a goal amount and begin raising funds. You can have fun organizing a bake sale, lemonade and or other creative ways to contribute to the fundraising efforts.

Make a house a home: What better way to support another family than to help build the home of another family in need? Search online and ask around your community for available volunteer opportunities, and ways to donate money or materials.

Get creative: While it’s great to align with an existing organization and foundation, don’t feel like you can’t create your own path of giving. Whether you decide to start your own organization as a family or make a hoard of PB&J sandwiches to give away, there’s always room for creativity when giving.

Participate in a walk-a-thon: Spend time with your family, exercise and give back all at the same time. Align with an organized walk and have fun raising awareness and funds for a specific cause.

What’s your family’s tradition of giving?
