Sometimes, it’s easy to overlook your own town as a vacation destination. There are plenty of adventures to be had within a few miles of your home – or even just beyond your front door. Here are six easy ways to spend your next staycation outside:
1. Check Out a Nearby Farmers Market
If you haven’t visited your local farmers market, you’re probably missing out on some of the best produce around. In addition to fresh fruits and veggies, many farmers markets also stock artisan cheeses, baked goods, beautiful flowers and crafts.
Finding a local farmers market is as easy as a quick search online. Numerous websites can help you find the nearest market after you input your ZIP code.
2. Catch a Sunrise or Sunset
The rising and setting sun is one of the most beautiful natural sights in the world and does wonders for rejuvenating your spirit. Set the alarm clock or stay up late, and seek out the nearest beach, park or open meadow. Getting away from city lights will reward you with a first-rate view.
3. Plan a Picnic
Picnics don’t have to be fancy – even taking your lunch to a park is a great start. Keep a blanket, plastic cutlery and Bounty quilted napkins in the trunk of your car to be ready for an impromptu picnic, or simply put your dinner on paper plates, grab a blanket and bring the feast to your backyard. And keep a Puffs SoftPack in the glove compartment in case you or the kids get seasonal-allergy sniffles!
To make your picnic a truly memorable affair, select a local park you haven’t visited before. Pick up a few special food items at the grocery store, such as cheese, grapes, granola bars or yogurt-covered raisins. Tuck these into a basket with sandwiches and drinks, and you’re good to go.
4. Become a Field Expert
Learning and the outdoors go hand-in-hand – all you need is a subject of interest! Pick up a guide to plants, trees, birds or bugs and become an expert on the great outdoors. Check your local parks and recreation centers for free guided nature and garden walks. And even if your explorations lead to dirt stains, don’t worry – Tide PODS with Downy has you covered.
5. Try Badminton, Bocce Ball or Croquet
Perfect for weekends or warm evenings, these outdoor games are great for various ages and fitness levels. Play one-on-one, or invite your friends and neighbors for an afternoon tournament and grill-out. And don’t forget the sunscreen! Olay Complete SPF 15 All Day Moisturizer with Sunscreen is a light, non-greasy formula that blocks harmful UVA and UVB rays.
6. Scavenge the Neighborhood
Plan a scavenger hunt the whole family will enjoy by writing a list of items that can be found in your area during the current season. Include easy items such as a stick, a flower, a garden tool, a ball, a garden glove, an acorn and a pebble. Also include more challenging items such as a rock with a fossil, a feather, a shell or a key. (You’ll probably have to plant some items in advance.)
Give your kids a bucket to carry their finds, and you’re ready to go. The winner gets scavenger-hunt-champion bragging rights!
