Summer is an amazing season – the sunshine, the warm breeze, the butterflies, the barbecues, the bare feet. But kids’ three-month-long vacations consume parents with one nagging, daily concern, too: how to keep little ones busy and active all day, every day, when school’s out. So when school’s in session, there are plenty of reasons for parents to celebrate! Here, eight moms share their favorite thing about their kids being in school.
“It’s so awesome to have a regular daily schedule again! If summer were one week longer, I would have lost my mind. I. Need. A. Routine!” -- Rita B., mom of a preschooler and a third-grader.
“I love that I don’t have to worry about setting up playdates or having their friends over all the time in summer. I mean, I know kids need to be social, and I’m happy mine have friends, but in school, they are just with their peers all day by default, and it’s not my third full-time job to schedule playdates constantly.” -- Jenny H., mom of two elementary-school kids
“Not having to make three meals a day, every day, for all of us. I love that my kids’ schools serve them lunch for a very small fee. It’s as cheap as if I made it myself, and it saves me lots of time!” -- Marlow M., mom of a sixth-grader and a second-grader

“I love that my kids have afterschool enrichment programs. It saves me so much schlepping around from one thing to the next. Plus, they get to do these things with their friends, which they love, and it’s so much cheaper than private lessons. Win win!” -- Lauren A., mom of two middle-schoolers

“Having my hands free. I feel so much more productive when my kid’s not home!” -- Anika R., mom of a first-grader
“I can hear myself think clearly, and even have an adult conversation without interruption, for the first time in months. That’s heaven for me.” -- Cece S., mom of twins in kindergarten
“Going grocery shopping without four hands pulling me in different directions, removing things from my cart, throwing food or eating my shopping list, is my absolute favorite thing. It almost feels like a vacation when I push my cart ALONE down the isle. Sometimes, I even find myself enjoying the music. LOL!” -- Heather M., mom of a kindergartner and a first-grader
“I can get back to yoga classes, or go for a jog, and try to get back in shape again, finally!” -- Mia O., mom of a second-grader
