When I was a little girl, every year around the holidays, my mom, dad, sister, and I would pick one day where we took time out from the hustle and bustle of the season to have a movie marathon. We’d each choose a flick, and we’d spend the day lounging in our pajamas, eating yummy food, and watching four movies in a row. It was one of the best days of the year, and I always vowed to carry on the tradition when I had children -- only, right now my kids are 2 1/2 and 2 months, so I don't think we're quite ready for a movie marathon day just yet.

I do love me a tradition, though, particularly of the holiday variety. Last year, my daughter and I went to a bakeshop in town to pick up a box of cookies for the mailman. Instead of just picking up the box and taking off, we sat down and had a few cookies and milk. It's nothing fancy, but I'm planning on sticking with this mini-tradition each year. (And it will be great to get a photo of her in front of the giant cookie case each year!)

That said, I'm always open to more traditions! I asked 10 moms what fun and unique things they do around the holidays every year and got some really great answers. Here, 10 fun holiday traditions you just might want to steal for yourself!

1. "We buy decorations each year that reflect our year. Last year, I had a pregnant mom, my son had a karate belt, my daughter a dancer. We also make a gingerbread house from scratch every year, which is a multi-day undertaking." -- Sasha B., mom of three

2. "I pick one day when I make the rounds at a couple of local friends’ homes to say hello. I bring cookies, they sometimes show me their gifts. I like to make time even though it's a busy time of year, even if the visit is only for a half hour." -- Michele Z., mom of twins

3. "Two years in a row, my oldest daughter and I have picked one day to make holiday crafts. We found a few cute things we wanted to do online, I got the supplies, and we made an afternoon of it. Fun!" -- Ilene P., mom of two girls

4. "Every year, my family picks a night to pile in the car and drive around, looking at all the pretty holiday lights in our neighborhood." -- Laura V., mom of a toddler girl

5. "A group of my friends and I actually go caroling every year. One of our friends rents a van and we all wear silly sweaters. It's so much fun. Everyone looks forward to it every year!" -- Erin M., expecting

8. "My father-in-law arranges a scavenger hunt for us every year. It's completely silly, but we've actually all gotten really competitive about it. I'm determined to win this year!" -- Lisa W., expecting

9. "My whole family wears matching pajamas pretty much for the entire month of December. It started out with just the kids, but a few years ago I bought matching pairs for my husband and I and make him wear them. He's come around to them. Sort of." -- Courtney A., mom of three

10. "I have a scrapbook I put on our coffee table right after Thanksgiving until New Year's. In it, are any recipes, photos, etc. from past holiday seasons. Every year, I add to it. I hope to give it to my kids someday." -- Liz S., mom of one girl
