Jan. 19 is circled on my wall calendar. Scribbled inside that little square in bright, red ink are two words: No School. For many of us, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is part of another three-day weekend when we stay in pajamas and have a Monday movie marathon. As much as we all love munching popcorn on the couch and not having to drive the carpool gang, this holiday, which honors one of the greatest leaders in American history, provides us parents a rather unique opportunity. It gives us the perfect springboard for a chat with our kids about important principles like standing up for what you believe in and equal rights, ideals for which King fought his whole life.

Though many recall his famous words from the “I Have A Dream” speech, King gave us many quotes that are ideal conversation starters. Take a moment to share his words with your kids and explore why we celebrate this courageous man. Who knows -- maybe his words will inspire your little ones to think about how they can begin to make a difference in their world.
