15 Women Share What Makes a Man a Good Dad

There’s more to fatherhood than fixing your leaky sink. Here’s what makes dads great.

Someone once said, “Every father should remember that one day his child will follow his example instead of his advice.” What this means is that, although dads as a group may be known for their words of wisdom, it’s often more important what they do -- who they are -- than what they say. Here, 15 women weigh in on what makes a man a good dad. Their responses range from heartwarming to hilarious, proving there are many ways to step up to the plate of fatherhood and hit a home run.

1. “My dad was there for one wedding dress shopping trip, which was great [because we were] able to dance in the lobby to see how dresses felt.” -- Sutton P., Baltimore, Maryland

2. “A good dad spends quality time and makes that time special. My dad routinely took us hiking, canoeing, swimming, and flower-picking for my mom.” -- Kerri Anne S., Wenatchee, Washington

3. “He helps me, but also makes me learn. For instance, he’ll come fix a dripping sink, but not without showing me what to check, what tools to use, etc.” -- Christina M., Plymouth, Michigan

4. “My dad is always able to make me smile, even when I’m having a bad day. I used to roll my eyes at him a lot, but now I realize that’s his way of comforting me.” -- Jules M., Berkeley, California

5. “My dad was a big love DOER. Saying it and giving hugs and kisses weren’t his thing. But doing was. He loved unconditionally and demonstrated it daily.” -- Nancy G., Portland, Oregon

6. “A good dad is one who is willing to and able to learn from his past mistakes.” – Colleen W., Conshohocken, Pennsylvania

Pianos are very heavy!) He didn't SAY much love at all (I think he said he loved me at my wedding? Maybe?), but he DID love.” -- Rebecca M., Dublin, California

11. “My dad took me prom dress shopping!” -- Kim H., Huntsville, Alabama
