16 Hilarious Excuses Kids Gave for Making a Mess

Why do kids make a mess? Only they can explain.

By Jeanne Sager

There’s a moment in every mother’s life that features copious amounts of one of the following: baby powder, cereal, glitter, stickers, or a combination of the aforementioned. It probably goes without saying that children are involved in the “copious amounts of” portion of this.

Kids are good at making messes. No. Wait. Scratch that. Kids are better at making messes than moms are at making coffee.

From what we can tell, the only thing kids are better at than destroying the living room in under four seconds is coming up with excuses for the mess that send us running for the kitchen to get our laughs out without them watching. Behold the funniest excuses moms have gotten for the disasters in their midst.

1. “Once when my older son was 3½ years old, he opened a jumbo paper towel value pack I had just bought and began literally tossing rolls around the room. I said, ‘No, buddy, I don't want those all over the place.’ He said, ‘Well, you should have thought about that before I did this,’ which I realized was a perfectly tweaked parroting of the typical parent line of ‘You should have thought about that before you did this.’” – Aly W.

2. “My 6-year-old, Piper, used to say her evil twin Viper did it. Now it's usually blamed on her little brother though!” – Sarah B.

3. “My 2-year-old’s answer is always... ‘because.’ ‘Because what?’ I'll say, and his response, ‘Just because. Now say it’s okay, Mommy.’" – Shauna R.

4. “My 3-year-old will occasionally blame The Hulk.” - Heather F.

5. “My 2½-year-old's excuse for everything naughty is ‘I have to!’ She picked it up from me (what I say when I have to hold her down to get her buckled into her car seat, get clothes onto her body etc.).” – Anne-Marie K.

6. “My 5-year-old was doing homework at the kitchen table. I left the room for a minute and heard, ‘Mommy, I made a mess!’ He was across the room with raw egg all over his hands and on the floor. I had set them on the counter to make cheesecake later. I was like, why were you even touching the egg in the first place? ‘I wanted to move it.’” – Sarika C.

7. “My son went through a long spell of blaming all bad behavior on 'the monkeys' because he'd just learned about evolution.” – Ruth D.

8. “My 2-year-old figured out how to turn on the faucet for the tub by himself, and once while I was out of the bathroom for a quick second, I heard the water both running and draining. I yelled at him to turn it off because he was wasting water. ‘I not wasting it. I using it,’ he said.’ What do you mean?’ I said, exasperated. ‘It making me happy,’ he said. – Leila S.

10. “For a while if you asked my 3-year-old why he was doing something he wasn't supposed to, he'd say ‘Because it's a sunny day!’” – Sa’iyda S.

11. “My son peed in the middle of the floor because he was trying to beat a long distance peeing record for the Guinness Book of World Records. He didn't beat the record.” – Lisa L. C.

12. “My kids never make a mess. Somehow, someone else always did it.” – Alina G.S.

13. “My 3½-year-old daughter left a note on her messy bedroom floor while getting ready for daycare that read ‘Dog mad the mes’.” – Amanda T.

14. “Me: 'Kamryn, why? Stop making a mess.' Kam: 'Oh, sorry mom, I forgot.'” – Karin N.

15. “My son tells me a ghost did it.” – Elizabeth H.

16. “My daughter says ‘Jesse did it’. Jesse is her imaginary friend who is sometimes a boy and sometimes a girl, and sometimes 2-years-old and sometimes 10-years- old, depending on the severity of the mess/ situation she is about to be in trouble for. Then she shakes her head and puts her hands up and says, ‘I guess Jesse's just bad, Mom.’” – Terri W.
