19 Thoughts Every Mom Has Once the Kids Are Back in School

Summer sure is sweet, but there’s nothing greater than having kids back in school.

By Lorraine Allen

The kids are back in school! The kids are back in school! The kids are back in school! Woo! Is there a better day of the year? I don’t think so. Sure, summers rock. Who doesn’t love those long, lazy, hot days when there’s no schedule to stick to, no homework to check on, no mad rush to get dinner or breakfast on the table at a certain time? No buses to catch? But still, after months of unstructured playtime (which, let’s face it, include their own challenges—big ones,) every parent is more than thrilled at the thought of that first school bell ringing loud and clear, finally. Here are some of the thoughts going through a mom’s head right about now:

1. OMG. I can hear myself think. (Hello? Oh, hi. Here’s that list of a thousand things that I wanted to get done but couldn’t for the last quarter of year.)

2. Serenity now!

3. Can I eat those brownies?

4. What is it that I do when I have a moment to myself again? I seriously can’t remember. I know there were several things. Things I love. Important things…other than work….And they were…?

5. No one will notice if I finish these brownies.

6. Where’s the dog?

7. “I’m going to the bathroom everyone!” Oh, wait, I can do that without making an announcement.

8. Okay. This is creepy quiet for 9:15 am.

9. The phone! I need to make so many phone calls right now! Kids, where is my PHONE?!

10. Is it too early to start planning our next vacation? Maybe this one could be a real vacation?

11. This is sad. There are no sunscreen or jam fingerprints on my laptop. They’re growing up too fast!

12. Maybe just one more day at the beach with the family would have been nice. How long is this school year?

13. They’re in school!

14. What should we make for dinner tonight? Lasagna and a salad and maybe an apple pie? We all love lasagna. And pie. Or maybe brownies.

15. I wonder if they’ll have homework tonight. Ugh! Homework!

16. What if the bus driver’s a grump?

17. What if I get stuck at work and I’m late with dinner? After they’ve been in school all day? Will they starve?!

18. How many more years of school do we have?

19. Hello? Anyone there? Why are my two shoes and my keys exactly where I left them? Is someone messing with me? That’s a sick joke. It’s not funny, people.

What are your thoughts when your kids go back to school?
