5 Keys to a Completely Unbalanced Life

5 Keys to a Completely Unbalanced Life

One frazzled mom shares the winning secrets to her seriously out-of-balance life.

By Wendy Robinson

Last night I lay in bed, listening to my husband sleep. Though I was tired at a bone-deep level, my mind was swirling with things to do: finish my homework for grad school, prep for that meeting at work, make sure I remembered the peanut butter and jelly sandwich in Miles’ lunch, double check that we paid that dentist bill … I eventually got up and wrote a to-do list and fell asleep on the couch.

The next day as I nursed an extra large iced coffee, my boss (who is single and childless and looks glowingly well rested) said, “I just don’t know how you do it!” in an admiring way.

I didn’t want to tell her that the secret of my “success” is also the sure recipe for burnout: I am leading a totally unbalanced life.

So, if you are feeling like life is just too simple and you’d like to increase your stress level, just try these five easy steps:

1. Remember sleep is for the weak. Who needs that restorative seven to nine hours per night? You can totally slog through day after exhausted day with just three to four hours.

2. Taking time for yourself is totally overrated. You should always be busy and available to anyone who needs you. Forget that you ever had hobbies or interests. Just let your identity as a mom totally take over.

3. Skip date night. For like, five or 10 years. You guys are parents now. No need to waste time having fun with each other when you could be home cleaning the house or making a healthy dinner for your kids.

4. Stop reading books. Or watching shows that aren’t animated. Or seeing movies that are rated higher than PG. So your brain starts feeling a little mushy, who cares? You can just watch that animated potty training DVD again. For the 13th time today.

5. Remember to make sure you feel guilty about something today. Remember that you can always be doing better, so really make sure you’re aware of how you could improve. Not crafty? Make sure you look at all the impossibly crafty posts on Pinterest. Hate to cook? Heat up a frozen pizza and then search for adorable bento box lunches that better moms lovingly put together every day. Feeling frumpy? No? Well, go check out some fashion blogs and you’ll feel frumpy in no time.

See? You’ll be out of balance before you know it!

Are you feeling closer to balance or burnout lately?
