5 Smart Ways to Keep Your Groove Going through Winter

5 Smart Ways to Keep Your Groove Going through Winter

Smart ways to push through the gray days of winter and elevate your mood.

The early signs of winter can be quite nice: a refreshing bite in the air, the season’s first snowfall, the last apple ciders of fall and all the hot chocolate you can stomach. But for some of us, the shorter days take their toll on our typically bright outlook.

What can you do to keep the pep in your step and endure the darker half of winter until the spring sun returns? Here are some ideas to keep up your momentum.

Focus Forward
With so much time likely spent indoors during the winter, it can be a great time to plan some personal goals – both short-term and long-term. Never got around to running that 5k last year? Now might be the time to pick back up the running shoes and start training for springtime.

Forward movement (whatever that looks like), from walking to running to any other exercise you choose, is one great way to keep your spirits lifted. It may seem like an obvious choice, but it’s one that’s tried-and-true.

Do you find yourself making excuses for why you can’t work out? Well, most of us can relate. One trick: Keep your workout gear packed in a bag and ready to go.

Here are a few items to make sure you have on the ready:

Always wanted to read more? Set a goal of two new books per month, and you can have a handful of new stories read by the time the snow melts. (Not to mention the surge for your imagination!)

Becoming goal-oriented is a great way to reset your direction and maintain positive, forward energy throughout February. We know, it’s not easy, but once you set goals and begin working toward them, a fuller plate may just mean time feels like it’s passing more quickly!

Steer Clear of the Downers
When the gray weather is bumming you out, the last thing you need in your life is another downer, right? This starts internally, by clearing the negative thoughts and speech from your life. You’ll be surprised at how much better you can feel simply by thinking positive!

Maximize Positivity
Try maximizing face time with the people who make you happiest. Plan a playdate with your favorite mom friends. Get the girls together for a day at the spa or give each other some in-home pampering. With all those books you’ve been reading, now might be the perfect time to start (or join) a book club!

Add a Splash of Color
Gray can often feel like the official color of February, but with a few creative splashes of color, you can perk up your mood and even pop against a dreary backdrop. Next time you’re getting ready for the day, accentuate your outfit with a colorful scarf or jacket and some bright colored nail polish.

Go out of your way to deck your home with a colorful decor – bright throw pillows, spring-themed curtains or even the occasional bouquet of fresh flowers. Your mood can often reflect your physical environment, so decorate for the energy you’re craving!

Be Creative!
When all else fails and you just feel down, take a closer look for joy in unexpected places. Take a moment to notice the little things that make you smile, and put in some extra effort to experience them more often!
