6 Simple Tips to Transition to Spring Style

You’re beyond ready to break out of that winter cocoon and become a spring butterfly, but is your closet ready for this transformation? Spring brings lighter fabrics and covetable pops of color, but also wacky temperatures, so re-working some of your go-to outfits for this new season is rather tricky.

But whip open those closet doors, ladies, and follow these fabulous tips from stylists and fashion gurus. They’ve shared their top tricks to transition your blah winter wardrobe into a bright and sassy spring style.

1. Layer, layer, layer. A style trick used year round, layering is the main way you can weatherproof your wardrobe. The key here is layering some fresh prints and colors with those pieces you’ve been wearing already. “A bright print can help you instantly feel like warmer days are here, even if it’s still a little chilly,” suggests Marissa Stempien, fashion editor at JustLuxe. “Layer a sweater over a simple sundress, so only a bit of the print peeks out of the bottom like a skirt. It gives your look a touch of springtime fun.”

Stempien points to a workhorse closet item that is the perfect layering piece: the blazer. “Light cotton or linen blazers are great for this funky weather period as they can be layered over sweaters and knits, tossed over thicker dresses, or added to your favorite weekend jeans outfit,” says Stempien. “As the weather heats up, the light material will be a great layer at night or inside without being too heavy or hot. Opt for lighter colors that can work as a neutral in both seasons.”

2. Those boots are still made for walking. You may think with the arrival of spring, you need to ditch those boots, but don’t stash them away so fast. “The ankle boot has been on trend for a while now, and the style isn't going anywhere anytime soon,” says celebrity stylist Corey Roché. “They were big this winter, but don't put them away just yet. They can easily be transitioned into this season by wearing them with shorts, skirts, and even dresses.”

3. Dive into the trench. The great thing about this wardrobe staple is you can use it for almost every season transition: from summer to fall, fall to winter, and winter to spring. It can be worn with everything in your closet – it’s an equally perfect topper for a dressy cocktail shift or a T-shirt and jeans.

4. Revisit your button-down shirts. You may see them hanging in your closet and yawn because they are so blah, but those button-down shirts are the Clark Kents of your wardrobe: They have secret style superpowers. Roché suggests incorporating that oh-so-versatile chambray shirt when the spring season hits. “A chambray shirt can be tied up over a maxi dress, tucked into a maxi skirt, worn with skinny jeans and cutoff shorts, or even thrown on as an extra layer over a T-shirt,” he says.

Don’t forget about its cousin, the white button-down. “While a plain white button-down shirt can seem almost boring when compared to other awesome things in your closet, this piece is a serious must-have,” says Stempien. “Easy to pair under sweaters in winter, with a blazer at work, as a cover-up at the beach, and tucked into a pair of springtime shorts, it’s the go-anywhere, do-anything, outfit-maker. Nab a few in lighter cottons, as they are easy to layer and will stay cool in the warmer months.”

5. Switch the small things. On those brisk spring evenings, you may still need some extra warmth. Instead of that bulky wool scarf, opt for a lighter, cotton version, maybe in a stripe or a pattern. Don some pops of color with a bright statement necklace or a chic, oversized ring in a springtime hue. These little changes to your outfit make it easy to spring into the new season.

6. Trends are your friends. As spring comes to town, adding some of its top trends to your regular look is a simple wardrobe makeover trick to welcome the new season. “Gingham is spring’s go-to pattern,” says stylist Emily Dell. “Another dominant trend on this season's runaway is ’70s glam. Incorporate it now with some fringe accessories, like a fringe cross-body bag. Stripes were big in 2014, and stripes are back and better than ever. Find a fabulous shift dress with a thin vertical stripe, and pair it with a black blazer.”
