9 Weirdest Things Moms Have Found in Their Kids' Beds

Because sometimes a stuffed animal or special blanket just won’t do.

Most kids have a favorite blankie or lovey when they’re little -- something warm and cuddly to snuggle with at night, something with a cutesy name that makes everyone go “awwww.” But a lot of kids put a little more, uh ... personality into their choice of a beloved bedfellow, and these bizarre attachments have their moms (and now us too) laughing out loud. If you’ve ever found weird things in your kid’s bed, read on for comfort that you’re not alone.

1. “My son was really into an old tuning fork of my dad’s. He had been known to sleep with it, and once, he smuggled it into my bed.” -- Holly F., Los Angeles, California

2. “My 3-year-old son sleeps with the extension hose attachment for the vacuum. He named it Hose. He often asks to bring it with him when we leave the house, too.” -- Kelli S., Peru, Indiana

3. “My 2-year-old did not want a pumpkin [from the pumpkin patch]. Instead, she insisted on a weird goose-necked gourd, and she called it her Birdy and slept with it in her crib. We woke up early the next morning to her blood-curdling screams. Turns out, the beloved Birdy Squash was decapitated in the night. She awoke to only the head of the squash by her pillow, and the body on the floor. My oldest daughter did some minor surgery on the squash (she used tape to repair the break), and all was well again.” -- Amanda B., Summerland, British Columbia

4. “My kid was in love with a squash, too. His was an acorn squash.” -- Lisa R., Los Angeles, California

5. “My daughter is 18 years old now, but when she was wee she became obsessed with a face cloth for about a year. She even named it Loopy, because it had a loop on one corner for hanging it up. Loopy had to come everywhere with us, and of course my daughter had to sleep with it. It was so odd! I’ve kept Loopy in my daughter’s memory book.” -- Helena S., Toronto, Ontario

6. “My son went through a phase where he insisted on taking a wire whisk to bed.” -- Elsha V., Overland Park, Kansas

7. “My daughter asks to sleep with the weirdest things and will wake up in the middle of the night frantic if she can’t find them. Once it was two used [bandages].” -- Kathleen F., Katy, Texas

8. “You know that shelf liner that’s grippy? The stuff that’s sort of like a squishy grid? And how sometimes you see jar openers that are basically circles of that material? We have two of those, a blue one and an orange one. When my daughter was a toddler, she used to carry those around and sleep with them sometimes. They were called Blue Thing and Orange Thing.” -- Bethany G., Yokosuka Navy Base, Japan

9. “My son once smuggled an avocado into his bed. It would be accurate to say I found it ‘too late.’” -- Jessica G., New Haven, Connecticut
