Ask kids what they think of their own names, and their answers might really surprise you!

Naming kids is something most parents put a whole lot of thought and love into. For some moms, it’s one of the things they enjoy most about expecting a new child! For other moms, (like me), even though they love thinking of names for their kids, they feel so frazzled by all the choices, they make a rushed decision at birth, or leave the naming up to someone else, like the baby’s dad. Some people choose to name their child after a loved one, or after a place, or a famous person they look up to. Some people look for unique names for their kids, or names that are androgynous. But no matter how your kids came to get their names, the one thing that’s for sure is that in the end, they are pretty much stuck with them for their entire childhood, if not for their whole lives.

Have you ever wondered what kids think of their names? I asked 20 children, ages 3 to 17, to share their thoughts:

1. “My name is so much cooler than my brother Ethan’s lame name!” -- Luke, age 14

2. “I wish my name was Captain Hook! Or Josh.” -- Grace, age 4

3. “My name is so boring. I wish it was spelled with an ‘e’ at the end!” -- Ann, age 17

4. “My name should be Rock-O.” -- Margie, age 6

5. “I would have never chosen this name. It’s a girl’s name!” -- Lucien, age 8

6. “My name’s unique!” -- Charlotte, age 8

7. “I was named after my grandma. I wish they named me after my dog instead.” -- Audrey, age 6

8. “I don’t know what my name means.” -- Sidney, age 5

9. “No one can say my name right.” -- Abba, age 7

10. “My real name’s going to be Dragonfly Sparkles soon when I change it. My mom said I can change it later.” -- Claire, age 4
