We got a twin bed with a trundle that went underneath for my eldest when she was three. Bad idea. She had acrophobia and the extra height was way too much for her. So she slept in the trundle, NOT raised. So her bed slid out from under the main bed, and just stayed that low. Then in the morning I just slid it back under, giving the small bedroom more floor space. It worked out great.
