There’s more than one way to say “I love you,” and there’s more than one way to celebrate the holiday that seems desperate to convince us a box of chocolates and a dozen red roses is the only way to spoil our sweethearts. If you’re looking to start a new tradition this Feb. 14, read on for some fun ideas to freshen up your old habits.

1. “We get Chinese takeout every year. Everywhere is always crazy, and I hate the ‘forced romance’ feel of gifts/flowers on Valentine’s Day.”

2. “We always decorate heart-shaped pizzas.”

3. “We have a Valentine’s Day poetry reading. We all make up silly poems about why we love each other, and then we perform them while we eat homemade heart-shaped sugar cookies.”

4. “We buy the kids the same decorated (with their names) chocolate hearts that my husband’s mom always bought him. Then we get cheesecake to go and eat it after everyone is in bed.”

5. “We’ve somehow ended up with a tradition [of getting fast-food burritos] for Valentine’s Day. We’re not fancy, and whenever we try, we wish for burritos.”

6. “ We go to the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.”
