Most stay-at-home moms will agree on one thing: It is not an easy job. And yet these women choose to stay home with their kids, instead of joining or returning to the workforce. We asked them why they made that decision. Here, a dozen women explain what they love about being stay-at-home moms.

1. “There’s no greater or more fulfilling job than being home with my kids. Even on their craziest days, I love being around them. They’re entertaining, funny, and mine.”

2. “The flexibility to be able to do something incredibly fun at a moment's notice or having our simple weekly routines can’t be matched.”

3. “Less pressure makes for a calmer home environment. And that’s worth it.”

4. “Being a consistent force in my children’s lives is the most important thing.”

5. One SAHM loves being able to prioritize her “kids’ wellbeing and development, without trying to balance an outside job on top of that.”

6. “I had one-on-one time with my son before my daughter came along and then, because my son was going to preschool, I had one-on-one time with my daughter. I wish I had given her more time, but I know we had the chance to get incredibly close in the 18 months I was home with her. You never regret it.”

7. “Being there for the big moments -- first steps, first words, first day of school. I couldn’t imagine missing that.”

8. “I love seeing how their minds work -- creative games they play and make-believe stories they’re always inventing. It doesn’t get better than that.”

9. “Being able to take advantage of a sunny day and just hang out in the park. These spur-of-the-moment activities can’t be done with a full-time outside job.”

10. “I view being home with my kids as a gift. We are fortunate to be able to afford it, and I like that I’m the one making decisions, not a babysitter, nanny, or day care provider.”

11. “I love how we interact as a family. Some days it’s about cleaning the house, other days it’s about an impromptu picnic, other days are educational museum visits. It’s how a family should work.”

12. “I worked up until my son was 5 years old. The stress of balancing a sometimes-crazy job with the ever-changing demands of a child made me feel like I wasn’t succeeding at anything. Being a [stay-at-home mom] is definitely a lot harder, but it’s also 10 times more rewarding.”
