In your single days, you may have daydreamed about how you might meet your significant other. Turns out, it rarely seems to play out exactly how we imagined! Here, a dozen women describe their first time meeting the man they would go on to marry.

1. “We were with a group of friends, headed out, all singing along to the radio, and decided to go to a karaoke place. We spent two hours singing along to some really good and some really terrible songs. After we left, we went to my friend’s house where I taught my now-husband how to swing dance, and he taught me how to dance merengue. The rest is history!” -Katie C.

2. “My husband and I met [online] through a mutual friend. He messaged me to tell me that he thought that I was cute. I thought it was super weird, but our mutual friend told me to be nice to him. That was eight and 1/2 years ago, and every single day I am glad that I was!” –Alexandra Y.

3. “We met at the beach. He came up to me and asked me to hold his keys while he went out to the water. When he came back, we started talking and hit it off. We pretty much became exclusive that day -- back in 1991!” -Shawna W.

4. “He worked with my stepdad, who wanted to set us up on a blind date. We both agreed to humor him, so [my stepdad] asked my now-husband if he could come over and help with a project, then introduced us. We hit it off immediately.” -Keslie G.

5. “Our sophomore year of high school, he was dating someone I didn’t get along with. So I started writing him notes and flirting with him during the class we had together. I fell for him immediately. Then, he moved, and there were no cell phones back then! But junior year, I went to the senior prom, and while dancing with my date, I got a tap on my shoulder. There he was. Been together ever since!” -Katie F.

6. “We met online through my best friend from high school who worked with him. After talking for almost a year, he traveled to meet me. We met for the first time face-to-face at the airport. [My friend and I] were supposed to be there before him, but his mom gave us the wrong flight info. So he was already waiting there when we arrived. We had an instant connection and held hands out of the airport and all the way back to my house. We've been married 10 years and have four children!” -Amanda B.

7. “The company I work for was doing marketing consultation for the company he was working for. We first met in a business meeting. My first impression was that he was intelligent, friendly, and easy on the eye, but the possibility of going out with him didn't occur to me. It was after some conversations that we decided to meet for dinner. I was probably hooked by that point!” -Alli W.

8. “We were introduced through a mutual friend, and we spent a year chatting online before we met in person. When that finally happened, it was late at night. I remember being incredibly nervous, and when he called, his voice was really deep, and I hung up quickly out of surprise! He drove up from Florida to Savannah where I was going to school, and we had this awkward, weird thing where we knew each other but didn't know each other. We got over that quickly!” -Emily P.

9. “We met in high school. Our last names put us in the same homeroom, and our lockers were next to each other. By junior year, we were playing footsies under the table in history class (seated in alphabetical order, of course!). He asked me out that October, and we've been together since.” -Carol L.

10. “My mom says I came home from elementary school upset one day because kids were picking on one boy for no reason, and it made me sad because he was a nice kid. We weren't friends really until high school, and we started dating senior year. The rest is history.” -Danielle B.

11. “We knew of each other but didn’t meet ‘til a high school summer leadership camp. He was that kid in middle school who wore tie-dye shirts and had a ponytail. I was a preppy athletic girl, so we never really talked. But in the summer program, he looked completely different and caught my eye. What I thought was a scary guy in middle school was actually a sweet, soft-spoken person. We hit it off and became good friends instantly. The relationship took a few years to begin, though.” -Brenda W.

12. “I met my now-husband the first time in the coffee shop where he worked with my cousin. I was immediately like, ‘WHO IS THAT?’ when I saw him, but assumed he was gay since all the guys that worked there were gay. It wasn’t long before I found out, indeed, he was straight ... but had a girlfriend. But this was a challenge I could handle!” -Sheri R.
