4 Ways to Celebrate Valentine’s Day When You’re Apart

Discover 4 easy gestures to prove absence makes the heart grow fonder.

Everyone knows Valentine’s Day is the most romantic day of the year. We dress in red, exchange sweet nothings and bury our noses in blooming bouquets of freshly cut roses.

It’s a special day for couples to escape their busy schedules and celebrate why they love each other. But unfortunately not all of us can be together on Valentine’s Day. Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to keep the romance alive if you are separated from the one you love.

1. Share Your Day through Pictures
“I can be very romantic,” says Sun Whang, a nurse practitioner. “If I’m away from my husband I like to email him pictures of where I am in my new place.” She says sharing her day, even if that means taking a selfie while drinking her favorite coffee, helps her connect with her husband and feel romantic when she’s far from home on the big day.

2. Plan Ahead
Sun recalls a time when she and a former boyfriend were apart on Valentine’s Day. “Even though he was out of town, he called my local florist and had them deliver this big beautiful bouquet to my office. It was totally unexpected. He was thinking about me. He planned ahead and I felt so special.” Arranging something in advance, like sending flowers or a well-timed love letter, is a wonderful way to show someone how much you care.

3. Don’t Stay Home
Even though Sun is married now, she says if she were away from her husband on Valentine’s Day the last thing she would do is stay inside and feel sorry for herself. “I would definitely find out where the fun is on Valentine’s Day.”

Get out there and be social. Being open to new experiences is a great way to have fun!

4. Write a Handwritten Note
Veronica Lilly, a receptionist, says in a world obsessed with texting and typing, sometimes we forget how nice it is to receive a handwritten note. “Handwriting a letter is so personal. You can do cute things like spray the paper with your own perfume so the scent reminds him of you. You can’t do stuff like that with emails.”

Tip: Don’t know what to write? A stroll through any card store will provide plenty of inspiration. Better yet, speak from your heart and you’ll be surprised how easy the words flow.
