Dark skin is beautiful – Nicole

As a child, Nicole felt like it was wrong to have her complexion when the summer sun would darken her skin. Now, she focuses on teaching her daughter that any shade is beautiful, period.

“I grew up in a small town where everybody knew everybody. My family was the biggest family in the city, so you were related to half of the city. But I can't say that it was the most positive experience all the time. You would hear often, ‘Oh my gosh,’ in the summer, ‘You're so dark! You're so black!’ You know, like it was a bad thing to be black.

That's what we are. But I remember those phrases on repeat in the summer; and it took me a long time to get over that. And I would say when I got to school, I started being around people that were positive. It was okay to be black.

There was nothing wrong with it. It was okay to be brown; it was beautiful.

I have to start being this person, because I knew I would have children one day. I didn't know how many, I didn't know when, but I knew that I would have children, and I didn't want to give my daughter that. I didn't want to give my son that. I want my kids to look at the sun as life, and energy ... Not as something that makes them afraid of becoming something else, or something that other people don't agree with.”
