Embracing yourself – Jessica

While working in retail, Jessica learned that though the world may not always accept you, what’s important is that you accept yourself.

“My first job was at a retail outlet store, and I was a customer service rep. I was all over the store. I was a cashier, I was on the floor ... so I would help people find products, purchase products and things like that.

So, a lot of times I would have customers who would just completely ignore my attempts to assist them, even when they were obviously needing assistance. If I walked up to them they, you know, they'd say they were fine and go find other associates to work with.

People wouldn't come through my line. There were micro-aggressions like not handing money directly in my hand or things like that. And it was something that started to get to me so I just talked to my manager about how I should handle those things. What are better ways to handle those things?

She said, ‘You know, a lot of people don't respond to the way you look very well. Maybe it's your hair, maybe you should try dressing this way or putting your hair up in a bun or something like that.’ So instead of you know just recognizing the problem that was there I was just told that it's pretty much my fault and I would just have to change if I wanted things to get better.

My advice to people who are discriminated against or denied opportunities just because of who they are or how they appear, for every rejection that you receive embrace yourself even more. You're gonna get a lot of noes, but it's up to you to accept that and use that to fuel yourself to create spaces where people like you can thrive.”
