Olympian Ashton Eaton Is Proof That Moms Awaken Greatness in Their Kids
"You always do the best that you can, and that will speak for itself."

Decathlete Ashton Eaton is truly a world champion, who continues to break and set records -- including his own. Taking first place in decathlon and heptathlon events at World Championships since 2012, Ashton is heading to the 2016 Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and hopes to bring home the gold once again. (Eaton won the gold medal at the 2012 Olympics.) Yet, through all his achievements, Ashton will never forget his mother, Roz Eaton, and everything she did to make raising an Olympian a marvelous reality.
Life wasn't always as easy as Eaton makes the javelin throw and 1,500-meter run look. As a single mother, Roz did her best to raise young Ashton and taught him to dream big, despite the fact that they lived in a poor neighborhood. There were ups, downs, and struggles to help make Ashton feel comfortable in the skin he was in, even if it happened to be darker than the others around him.
This story, of Roz and Ashton's scary encounter with a group of people harassing them on the road, is chilling, but an inspiring message of hope -- and how a mother's love can conquer all. See for yourself:

It's heart-wrenching to think about anyone -- let alone a young child -- ever questioning his or her self-worth, because of others' treating them differently. How do you tell your kid he or she is enough, when it feels like the world is fighting against you at times?
This is what makes Roz's story so powerful and incredibly touching; she became the unshakable force Ashton needed, to prove you can always overcome adversity. As Roz shares in Procter & Gamble's "Raising an Olympian" video series, her advice to Ashton was: "You always do the best that you can, and that will speak for itself."
(So perfect, and so true.)
Whether building up Ashton to be unashamed of his biracial heritage, or remaining strong as a single mother -- no matter life's uncertainties that came her way -- Roz continued to display a strength that would encourage her son to become the best version of himself.
I can only imagine the pride and love Ashton has for his mother. Roz seems to embody the essence of motherhood, and what it means for moms to awaken an inner greatness within their child to believe and to achieve the inconceivable.
